SCARCE Sargent No. 507 RABBET Block Plane -- OUTSTANDING CONDITION!!!

SUPER HARD TO FIND.  Especially in EXCELLENT UNDAMAGED CONDITION.  Seven inches long with a 1-7/8 inch cutter.  Seems like a good idea.  I keep one on my bench and use it occasionally but I am terrified of dropping it.  Ohio made a similar plane but Stanley never bothered. There was obviously not much market for them.  They were expensive to make and brought top dollar at the hardware store.  The cut out sides make them very fragile.  Few were ever made and almost none survive today

Here is a great example.  The style of the Sargent trade mark, which is strongly stamped on the NEAR FULL iron dates it to the period between 1942 and 1943 when the 507 was discontinued. "Sargent" and "507" are cast into the frame on either side of the front knob.  The plane has been lightly cleaned preserving a beautiful dark patina on the exposed metal parts.  The japanning has worn a little thin but still provides substantial coverage.

Bottom line: it is a really GOOD LOOKER especially with its distinctive CUT OUT SIDES!  The plane is not damaged in any way and there is no rusting or significant chipping or dinging anywhere in the wood or metal.  This plane is guaranteed to have never been welded.  The original varnish affords near full coverage on the front knob.  It looks like Honduran Mahogany to me but it could be made from some of Sargent's so-called "East Indian" Mahogany.

You are not going to see one of these "fancy" block planes very often - even on eBay - and especially not in such EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION.  So buy it now and bag this rabbet while you can, lest one of those rascally eBay snipers catches you fiddling with your mouse and bangs this bunny right out from under you!
