The most powerful antenna on the market. real 60dBm gain with Alfa Ubdo gt8 USB adapter and 18" dish included. more gain achievable with larger dish only. can be combined with Alfa R36 USB router to make a repeater for other devices.

If you have been in the market for an outdoor weather resistant Wi-Fi client, the new UBDo-gt from Alfa Networks is an excellent choice. It features a 1000mW wireless receiver built into an outdoor weather resistant casing. It contains two mast-o ring mounting rings and a 8 meter (~24 feet) USB cable with a special dual-Y USB connection end that goes into your computer (features both a power/data connector and a secondary power-only connector so that you can use 2 USB ports on your computer to provide full power to the device without needing an external power source for it).

The Realtek RTL8187L chipset inside this device is the same chipset that is in the popular AWUS036H long range 1000mW USB adapter. In many ways, this is exactly like getting the AWUS036H adapter inside an expensive outdoor weather resistant casing. The primary difference though is that this device does not have an external antenna connector. Instead it comes with an integrated 12 dBi gain directional panel antenna. Personally I find an integrated antenna the best option for basic travel needs, so you do not have to lug around a heavy external antenna and worry about assembling/disassembling it when you are ready to hit the road. Because this is 12 dBi gain, you will get better performance compared to an 8.5 or 10.5 dBi outdoor external antenna anyhow.

More about the integrated 12 dBi gain directional antenna: Please keep in mind that because it is directional, you want to set it up to point in the general direction of the access point to which you want to connect. It is easy to mount and unmount the adapter if you need to change the placement of it on your RV or truck. Directional antennas are able to concentrate gain better in the particular direction in which they are pointed, resulting in better signal to the access points in that direction compared to an omni-directional antenna of the same gain. However they will pick up fewer access points in total compared to an omni of the same gain since they do not pick up from all directions.

More about the product: This is brand new in retail box. The WiFi adapter is integrated into the outdoor casing, along with the antenna. So there are few parts to take with you. You will get the unit itself, which is the outdoor casing with built-in 1000mW Wi-Fi radio and 12 dBi gain antenna, a 8m USB cable (has mini connector on the end that plugs into the unit), 2 mast-o mounting rings, and software CD-ROM.

Additional product features:

·         Supports wireless data encryption with 64/128-bit WEP, WPA (TKIP with IEEE 802.1x) and AES functions

·         Receive sensitivity: IEEE 802.11g -76dBm @ 54Mbps, IEEE 802.11b -92dBm @ 11Mbps

·         Output power: 30 dBm (1000mW)

·         This is the version with integrated 12 dBi directional panel antenna, not the version with the external antenna connector (external connector version has no integrated antenna FYI)

·         Does ship with Linux and Mac drivers but we cannot verify compatibility with particular distros or offer any Linux support (very limited Mac assistance is available)

FAQ- some common questions about Alfa UBDo-gt:

Is this device waterproof?
-This device is weather resistant, but not completely waterproof. In other words, if you have this mounted on your RV and it rains some, it will be fine. But if it falls off your boat into the ocean, it may not be okay. You can leave this outside for extended periods of time, but because it is an electronic item, we recommend bringing it indoors when it is convenient, and not exposing it to long periods of extreme heat or cold.

I pick up more signals using another product that has an omni-directional antenna of the same gain, but UBDo-gt gets better signal to some of them (and also worse to some), why?

-This product has a directional antenna. This concentrates gain in a particular direction for better range and signal in that direction. While it can pick up signals that are in the opposite direction, the distance will not be long, and the range to those signals will be weak. An omni directional of the same gain will pick up more signals total. But this antenna will give you better signal strength to signals in the direction in which it is pointed.

Can this item be used indoors next to my computer?
-If you want a 1000mw USB adapter to use indoors next to your computer, we recommend the AWUS036H palm-style adapter from Alfa Networks. This particular outdoor kit is better for use outside in an open area where the higher gain directional antenna can offer better performance. This device also requires more input power from your computer, so using it indoors next to your computer would use more electricity than something like the AWUS036H model.

with OPTIONAL Alfa R36 G model Router (not included!):

you can create your own network for all other devices IPods, IPads, tablets etc..... you can get Alfa R36 (G) Router for this Alfa ubdo gt8 USB adapter. It sells on eBay for $53. ( the speed of your internal network will be about 40% vs direct USB connect if your speed 10mbps then it will be around 4mbps .use direct connect for faster transfers)

R36 is a normal Wi-Fi router with one huge advantage- it is the only router that lets you use the Alfa ubdo gt8 long range Wi-Fi weatherproof receiver (included) as the Internet source of the router. That's right- instead of having to hook the router up to a cable or DSL broadband modem in your home, you can simply plug in an Alfa ubdo gt8 Wi-Fi receiver, then use a web browser to access the router's Wi-Fi signal scanner software. The router will connect to a Wi-Fi signal you choose via the Alfa ubgo gt8, and then broadcast it as a new local Wi-Fi signal so that all of your devices can use it. It is just like having an Alfa USB adapter connected to your cell phone, laptop, tablet, and desktop all at the same time!

How it works:

To use this device to share a Wi-Fi signal, connect it to Alfa ubdo gt8 (mounted on your Dish) via 16.4ft USB cable included (R36 can also be used as a standalone travel router, or with a 3G USB dongle from the supported model list shown in this PDF spec sheet. Then simply connect your computer to the R36 via ethernet cable for a one-time configuration and setup. Connect the Alfa ubdo gt8 to the R36, and using Wi-Fi scanning software built-into the R36, you can scan for and connect to available wireless networks in your area via the Alfa ubdo gt8. Once the R36 has connected to a network, you will be prompted to name and password protect your own new local Wi-Fi network, offering any device within a few hundred feet a strong Wi-Fi connection.

Examples of use(optional router):

...you're on the road often, you know picking up a good Wi-Fi signal from a hotel room can be difficult. Perhaps you already own an AWUS036H and that allows your laptop to connect to the hotel's weak Wi-Fi signal since your laptop's built-in Wi-Fi card could not even detect it. That's great, but now you want to download some new apps to your iPhone and you are pretty close to your data limit. The iPhone's built-in Wi-Fi card can't see the hotel signal either. Enter R36. Connect your AWUS036H (or UBDo= same chip Realtek RTL8187l) to the R36, and then link that up to the hotel's Wi-Fi signal. Now the R36 broadcasts a new signal your iPhone can see with full bars!

...you've just moved into an awesome apartment near campus, and Wi-Fi is free. Only problem is, the coverage is awful. Only one bar on your Windows 7 desktop, and your Android phone and tablet cannot even pick up the signal. Looks like you'll have to pay the phone company for expensive DSL Internet service. Enter R36. With your Alfa ubdo gt8, you can pick up the campus signal no problem. The R36 sends out a new signal that your devices all pick up at full signal strength. On the downside, you can't blame a lack of Internet access for failure to turn in your assignment.

These are just some of many ways you can use the R36 in conjunction with the UBDo. The R36 can also be used as a standalone travel router, or with a 3G USB modem from a wireless carrier too.
