Square pianos were the first popular pianos, and they revolutionized music and culture. They first made an appearance in London in the 1760's and were taken up by high society as a musical novelty but quickly dominated the piano market. John Broadwood was the most successful piano maker in London. He founded the oldest piano company in the world.

John Langshaw, an organist and music master in northern England, bought and distributed at least one hundred pianos from Broadwoods during his lifetime. His were some of the first to be sent across the Atlantic to Boston.

Here is told the absorbing and illuminating story of these early pianos.
