Scarce Cigar Box
"1896" Chas. Maschmeyer, Brooklyn, NY

Measures about 9" long x 5-1/4" x 1-1/2".

The cigar is called "1896", but the tax stamp is dated 1883 and the lithographed label is dated 1867. The graphics on the lid are etched into the surface of the box and the lid shows some soiling, but mostly what you see is the intended marbleizing. Part of the tax stamp is gone. The metal clasp on the lid is bent and doesn't latch, but appears intact.

Information about Maschmeyer cigars is very hard to find, other than the location of the factory in Brooklyn in the 1890s. This box is extremely scarce.
