Canadian Hutterite White Down Duvet

Canada's World Renowned Top Quality Down

Fill Power:  800+ cubic inches per ounce*

*Always check the down's fill power rating to ensure you are purchasing a top quality down.  Lower fill powers may suggest inferior down usage

Our Canadian made Hutterite Down Duvets are made from the highest quality, hand-selected Hutterite Duck Down from Alberta, Canada.  Our duvets use a higher ratio of down versus feathers to create a soft, light duvet that provides comfort and sleep benefits you will not get in a synthetic duvet.  We are long-standing members of the Canadian Down and Feather Association of Canada.  This is a regulating body that helps ensure that our product listings are accurate and truthful, so you can be assured of the quality of the duvet you've selected.  All our down products contain the Downmark Label of quality assurance.  Always check for this label when purchasing any down bedding products.  You are also encouraged to visit their website at http://www.downmark.ca/consumer_information/down_feather_quality.htm

The following information has been taken from the Canadian Down and Feather Association of Canada's website.  It will help you better understand the characterstics of down and it's benefits.

Many things affect the quality of a down product.  Generally, the best down comes from larger, more mature birds. When age and maturity are equal, goose down is better than duck down. However, down from a mature duck is better than down from an immature goose.

A high quality White Goose Down plumule will be very light and incredibly warm.  A poor quality White Goose Down plumule will not loft as well as the more mature down.  Even if there were more of this down by weight, it would not be as warm.  Down from immature birds not only tends to have poor lofting ability, it also tends to collapse in a relatively short time, because its fibers are so fragile. A duvet made with a mature down will be warmer, lighter and puffier. It will last much longer than one made with immature down

What makes down such a good insulator?
Each ounce of high quality down has about 2 million fluffy filaments that interlock and overlap to form a protective layer of still air that keeps warmth in and cold out. It is these tiny pockets of air trapped by the down fibers that actually do the insulating.  The more mature the down, the greater number of air pockets there are for more efficient insulating.  Loft is directly related to insulating power.  Because of its resilience, you can scrunch down up or flatten it out, and all it takes is a good shake for it to fluff up and bounce back.

Why is down superior to synthetics as an insulator?
Down gives approximately three times the warmth per ounce as synthetics. Far less down is needed by weight than other fillings, which means a much lighter, but warmer product. Synthetics mat and clump together in time, leaving empty cold spots, while down continually relofts, and molds itself to the body. Down also has the marvelous ability to breathe and wick away perspiration.  The more mature the down, the greater number of air pockets there are for more efficient insulating. Loft is directly related to insulating power.  Because of its resilience, you can scrunch down up or flatten it out, and all it takes for it to fluff up and bounce back is a good shake.  Down from immature birds not only tends to have poor lofting ability, it also tends to collapse in a relatively short time, because its fibers are so fragile. A duvet made with a mature down will be warmer, lighter and puffier. It will last much longer than one made with immature down.

Why do down products vary so much in price?
You may find a wide range of pricing for down products. There are many factors which affect the quality, and therefore the price. An inexpensive product will be filled with immature down, which will provide little warmth, and will most likely collapse after relatively little use. Shortcuts in the cleaning and processing will have been taken, and this will often lead to odor problems. The Down Association of Canada has also found that a substantial number of inexpensive offshore products have contained high percentages of feathers, rather than down as promised on the label. Workmanship and design are generally inferior on cheap products. Overall, a "bargain" is usually a waste of money. A quality product will certainly cost more, but it will be warm and cozy and last for many years. Something that costs more but lasts 10 times as long is a much better value.

How do I know I'm getting what I'm paying for?

The best guide is to look for the Downmark hang tag/label.  When you see this trademark, you know that the manufacturer has had to meet strict guidelines for quality. Not every item displays this tag. The right to use it must be earned. Once earned, quality standards must be strictly maintained. The Down Association of Canada is in fact more vigilant in detecting mislabeling than any level of government. If you do not see the Downmark tag, it is very difficult for the consumer to determine actual quality.

The insulating qualities of hand selected, Canadian Hutterite White Down keeps you warmer in the winter while remaining cooler in the Summer.  Down helps regulate body temperature during the evening and dissipate moisture for a more restful night's sleep. With a fill power of 800+, this duvet is lighter in weight yet still provides the same level of comfort as heavier duvets. The 400TC cotton shell is double stitched with white piping and has 4-way baffle box construction for more even down distribution, thus eliminating cold spots.

Available in 3 different fill weights. Choose Summer weight for a lighter duvet, or select Four Season's weight for a duvet perfect for use all year long. Also available in a Winter weight size for those that keep their thermostat's very low during the night.

Also available in 400TC Hutterite White Goose Down.  Both contain over 90% down content, due to the hand-selection process used by the Hutterite farmers.  Their down is also hand washed twice using soap instead of chemicals, for a more natural clean.  You'll definitely notice the difference with this quality Royal Elite Hutterite Duvet.

It is important to note that all of our down products carry the Downmark label which means that we are a Member In Good Standing of the Down Association of Canada.  Our bedding is subject to random testing to meet the Association's stringent specifications for down products.  Our duvets(comforters), pillows, blankets and throws are certified and meet the Down Association of Canada's standard for natural fill requirements.  You will never be disappointed with the luxurious quality of a Royal Elite Natural fill duvet.  And we certify that our products contain true down as stated, and often exceed the industry standards for down filled products.  To ensure you have a quality down product, look for the Downmark label.  It is your assurance of quality!

This duvet is "Made in Canada".

Duvet(Comforter) Specifications explained:

Fill power is the amount of lofting ability a specific down has (see photo).  The higher the number, the higher the lofting ability.  Mature birds produce clusters that are larger and consequently have a higher fill power.  Clusters with a higher fill power have more air pockets which increases the breathability and insulating properties of the product.  A higher fill power product is lighter in weight, and lofts higher.  Mature clusters are also more flexible and resist crushing better than a lesser grade of down.

Another benefit of down is its breathability and wicking properties.  Synthetic comforters trap heat and can cause overheating and excess perspiration during the night.  A natural fill duvet allows excess heat and moisture to escape, creating a more even temperature, and a comfortable night's rest.  The cotton shell/casing enhances the benefits of the duvet by possessing some of the same characteristics of a natural fill, such as breathability and wicking properties.  Down duvets (comforters) can provide long lasting enjoyment in excess of 10 years.  Follow the manufacturer's care instructions for longevity and durability.

Our duvets are constructed using baffle box design.  This type of structure creates a more evenly distributed fill and eliminates cold spots often associated with down shifting.  We use a 100% down-proof cotton shell that is double stitched and trimmed with white piping for a finished look and added durability.

Our down is cleaned and sanitized to remove all potential allergens.  The result is a product that is hypo-allergenic and will provide a restful night's sleep.

Royal Elite duvets are an investment in quality, durability and comfort.  A winning combination!

The Buyer’s Guide to Duvet/Comforter Purchases                  By Marlene Pearce

Maholi is a manufacturer of high end bedding under the brand names Royal Elite & Ambassador. When it comes to purchasing a new duvet for yourself or a loved one, the choices are endless & can sometimes be confusing. Your “best guess” can result in the purchase of an item that does not meet your needs or enhance comfort during rest. So how can you make certain that you are investing in a product that won’t end up “sitting on the shelf”? There are a number of things to consider when purchasing a duvet/comforter. We have created a brief check list of the things you should consider before making your purchase.

PRICE  If price is the deciding factor in determining what to buy, then it may come down to purchasing a synthetic fill duvet versus a natural fill. Synthetic fills can include (but are not limited to) Polyester, Cotton, Microfiber Gel, Bamboo, etc. This is in the order of potential cost, but there are exceptions to the rule based on the manufacturer, & what fabric has been used to create the shell. The order of potential cost for natural fill is feather, feather/down combinations, duck down (except Eiderdown), & then goose down.

SYNTHETIC OR NATURAL FILL  This may be decided by your answer to Question #1. Natural fill duvets can include duck & goose down, feathers with down, wool, & silk.

GOOSE OR DUCK DOWN   Duck down is less expensive than goose down but duck down from a mature bird can be a better lofting down than one from a less mature goose.

FILL POWER   Fill power is the lofting ability of down. The higher the fill power, the more a down will loft, & the lighter it will be. Fill power can be affected by two factors. It can be influenced by the amount of down versus feathers that are in the fill. In order for a product to be called down, it can possess 75% down clusters & 25% feathers & other sundry items. The only down that can carry the status of 100% down is Eider down. All other downs have varying combinations of down versus feathers. To ensure you have a quality product, look for the Downmark label on your down-filled item. This label is supplied by the Down Association of Canada.  A manufacturer must undergo testing & consistent compliance with the Association’s standards in order to use this label on their products. The Down Association of Canada is the “watchdog” for quality down products, & members’ products are randomly tested to ensure all products meet their stringent standards. Fill power can be affected by the source/type of down used. Immature fowl can create a lower fill power down, & some types of down are know to be of better quality/fill power than others. Hutterite Duck & Goose down have a higher fill power because the birds are mature and raised under a less technologically advanced system. Down is hand-washed & hand sorted, to ensure a higher quality product.

ALLERGIES   While today’s down is usually encased in a down-proof shell (which is determined by the weave of the fabric & not necessarily by the thread count), today’s down undergoes a cleansing process that helps remove contaminants & allergens that can cause unpleasant reactions. Depending on your level of sensitivity, you may still be able to enjoy the comforts of a natural fill duvet. Silk-filled duvets are noted for their hypoallergenic qualities. They contain a product known as Sericin that contains a natural antimicrobial property & helps prevent the addition of dust mites, mold, etc. Wool is also treated to be hypoallergenic & with the addition of a tightly woven cotton shell, this product is hypoallergenic as well. Wool has the ability to wick & retain moisture to create a drier environment for those who tend to perspire while sleeping. This moisture is released during the day & keeps a nice balance of comfort & warmth during the night.

MADE IN CANADA  The Downmark label & the location of manufacture may be an important consideration for you. Location is labeled on each item.

MY FIRST DUVET If this is your first duvet/comforter purchase, follow this checklist to become better educated about the current product offerings, & what might be right for you. If you are replacing an existing duvet you may have had this item in excess of 10 years. Production & quality may have changed since your last purchase, so a review of this checklist, or a brief discussion with a knowledgeable sales person may assist you also in making the best choice.

CHARACTERISTICS  Be certain to consider your “wish list” for a comfortable duvet. Duvets come in a range of types, weights, features & fills & there is one that will meet your specific needs. There is no need to settle for an inferior product that creates an uncomfortable sleeping environment.

WASHABLE If this is an important factor in considering a purchase, you may prefer to review synthetic fill duvets due to the wash ability of the fill. Natural fill duvets can last many years when properly cared for. Dry cleaning is recommended to ensure that any additional residue is removed from the clusters, & does not prevent the down from lofting after washing. Machine washing can leave soap residue & fabric softener can weigh down clusters & give a “flattened” appearance. The high heat from a clothes dryer can damage the shell or clusters & reduce the life of your investment.

COLD AT NIGHT  Some manufacturers produce different weights of fill for their duvets. The heavier the fill, the warmer the duvet. You can often be directed to the right weight by names such as Summer, Four Seasons, or Winter weight. Summer being a lighter fill & better for those who tend to be too warm when sleeping with a blanket & cover. Four Seasons is a weight that is recommended for year round use & for those that drop their evening temperature by 5 – 10F degrees during sleeping hours. Winter is a weight for those that tend to be cold during rest, or for those that drop the temperature at night by greater than 10F degrees.

USE ALL YEAR ROUND Try the Four Seasons’ weight. Most duvets, if they do not specify weight are usually a Four Season’s variety.

PARTNER If you do not have to consider the needs of a partner, then you are free to select the duvet/comforter that suits your needs alone. If you have a partner that tends to be cold during the night, & you tend to overheat, then a compromise may be in order.

HEAVIER OR LIGHTER This is always a personal preference. Some people prefer the substantial weight of a feather duvet, while others prefer the light weight of a high quality down. Natural fowl filled duvets usually include the weight specification of the duvet on the packaging; the higher the number, the heavier the duvet. Heavier does not necessarily mean warmer. Warmth can be affected by the maturity of the down clusters. A higher fill power down will require less down to create the air pockets necessary to provide warmth & the breathability that are treasured qualities of a natural down filled product.
