RPAS:

New Dillenger kits now feature a nifty little invention called ‘Removable Pedal Assist Sensor’ or RPAS.

Dillenger’s RPAS is a new innovation which replaces traditional sensors. The problem with the traditional sensors is that they require the crank to be removed, the bottom bracket to be undone and there can also be problems with compatibility. Often there isn’t quite enough room for the PAS disk behind the chain wheel which can lead to further complication.

The beauty of the RPAS is that it does not require the removable of ANY of the components on the bike! It’s designed so that the magnetic hall effect disk fits universally onto the left hand crank axel using a split disk arrangement, held in place by a Circlip. The sensor is then mounted easily using cable ties onto the base of the seat tube (just above the bottom bracket housing). The sensor module mounts easily to the frame and the sensor articulates so that it can be positioned with ease to the correct proximity.

Warranty:

Buying an e-bike conversion kit without a guaranteed warranty is a disaster in the making. We encourage customers to search around for the best value e-bike conversion kit, however take into account if the company you’re doing business with is going to be around in 6-12 months time to service that warranty (or if they are even supplying the same line of products). Some ebay sellers can be very good at taking hard earned money from consumers, but not very good at backing up their product.

Online stores can pop up one day and disappear the next without warning. The old saying, ‘you get what you pay for’ rings true for any high-ticket price product with complex electronic componentry. Buying from an experienced Australian electric bike expert is a no-brainer.

We encourage customers to do their research to see what's available online because we know that Dillenger electric bikes cannot be beaten on overall quality, price and service.

Buying overseas:

If you’re contemplating buying overseas, consider a few things first. Do you know much about the company you’re dealing with? Are they flogging all other types of products? Does the information on their ad suggest they are experts in their field? Do they have a website that shows they’re more than just a kid in a garage?

Does the overseas supplier offer a warranty in practical terms? How do they service that warranty from another continent? What are their guarantees? What are their motivations to service their warranty from country that doesn’t have consumer guarantees?

Added to these obvious issues, is the time it can take and the hidden local import duties and taxes you will have to pay. Do they mention that Li-ion isn’t flight-safe? The boat from China is a slow one and there’s no recourse for confiscated goods.

Dillenger is an Australian company with Aussie stock and we ship out with our courier daily, which means you get your goods sooner, with upmost peace of mind, full support and a meaningful guarantee.

Each Dillenger e-bike conversion kit is inspected for quality before they are sent out to the customer, to make sure that the product is up to our usual high standard.

Bike requirements:

For front wheel installations the distance between the front fork dropouts should be approximately 95-100mm. The fit should be very tight. Sometimes a small layer of paint may have to be removed just from the inside surfaces to fit the hub motor wheel.

This dropout clearance is standard for most bikes. If your front fork dropouts are very close to being the right measurements, usually some minor persuasion is all that is required to achieve the fit, the tighter the better.

If you own a 20” folding bike with narrower front forks (80mm clearance instead of 100mm) you will have to visit our website for information on the correct kit.

Notes on installation:

This kit is designed to be highly adaptive, in that not all components need to be hooked up for the kit to function perfectly.

For example, if your bike has hydraulic disk brakes (not mechanical) you don't need to install the e-brake handles. The kit will still function normally without them. Similarly, if you prefer not to install the pedal assist sensor on the crank, the bike can still be used just with the throttle (keeping in mind that using the throttle-override will effect the range).

The installation can be performed by anyone, no mechanical experience is required.

Other optional extras:

Compatible disk brakes to suit all of our kits: $19.00 ea.

Roswheel custom-designed triangular frame bag (used to stow the controller and wiring instead of the default saddle bag): $18.00 ea.

      Additional charger: $49.00

Hydraulic brake sensors (NEW) $29.00 (not exchangeable for e-brake handles) these are used to add the e-brake feature for bikes with hydraulic brake handles or brake handles with integrated shifters.

All optional extra purchases include free shipping with any kit purchase.

If you require any accessories, please notify us after purchasing this item.

FAQ

Will this kit fit my bike?

There are thousands upon thousands of different bikes out there, so there is no list to guarantee that it will, however almost all bikes, whether they are mountain bikes, road bikes, cruisers, choppers, BMX or whatever else, have very standard front and rear fork dropout widths which our kits are universally compatible with. The front-on profile of the motor wheel is also very similar to that of a normal wheel, so clearance on the fork section is also not a drama.

What size kit do I need?

The information you need to know will be written on the tyre of the bike you’re converting. It’s not the diameter of the rim alone, it’s a complicated measurement that is annoying to work out just once. The easiest, most straightforward way to know what size you need is to look at the info on the tyre. It should read 20, 24, 26, 28 or 700C somewhere on the sidewall.

Do the kits come with a tyre?

No, you can use the tyre that is coming off your other wheel. They are fine to use on the motorized wheel and that way you’ve got the same tyre front and rear, rather than a mismatched tyre.

Do I need to install the pedal assist sensor?

No, you don’t have to, the controller is programmed to work only with the throttle as input.

Do I need to install the e-brake handles?

No, similarly, you don’t have to install the e-brake handles, although they are good idea especially if you’re running the pedal assist sensor. If you’re just using the throttle, it is not essential.

Do 250W kits need torque arms?

No, don’t believe everything you read on the forums. Torque arms are really only useful for much higher-powered kits and even then they only start working if the dropouts are already loose from not tightening the wheel nuts sufficiently.

How much would a bike shop charge to fit this?

We charge $180 for the full installation and also a thorough once-over and tune-up. It is a DIY kit and one of the best things about this product is the pleasure you will get when you’ve gone to the extra effort to create your own electric bike. The satisfaction of completing this conversion leads us to recommend doing it yourself if possible.

Can I use disk brakes?

All of our Lithium ion powered kits are disk brake compatible.

Are ordinary brakes ok to use?

Yes, most bikes are built to travel quite a lot faster then what an e-bike can travel on the flat ground. Most riders can easily achieve speeds of well over 60km/h down a steep hill.

What do e-brakes do?

E-brakes cut the power when the brake levers are installed as an added safety, which is ideal for installations where you have installed the pedal assist sensor.

What is pedal assist?

Pedal assist is where the kit sensors the crank speed via a crank speed sensor (included), which activates the motor to ‘assist’ you when you pedal. All Dillenger conversion kits come with pedal assist sensors, magnetic disks and PAS displays with low, medium and high settings. The other option is to use the throttle. Both the throttle and the pedal assist (PAS) sensor can be installed and used together. Or one or the other can be installed. The installation is flexible in this way.

I have hydraulic brakes or brake levers with integrated shifters. Can I still use e-brake handles?

The e-brake handles that come with the kit may not be ideal if you have shifters you don’t want to replace. In this instance, if you want to pursue e-brake power cutoff, we have an optional hydraulic e-brake sensor which mounts on the existing e-brake handle module for $29.00 (not exchangeable for the standard e-brakes)

Can I ride in the rain?

Yes, but don’t leave the components to soak, it’s not good for them. The kits with upgraded connections have an even better waterproofing rating (see other conversion kit products from Dillenger). If you’re going to be riding in the wet frequently, it’s worth thinking about additional waterproofing for the controller (if supplied separately, depending on what kit you purchase).

Is there pedaling resistance from the motor?

      No

What are the advantages of the Dillenger 250W and 1,000W brushless motors?

Basically, there is zero friction with these types of motors and there is essentially only 1 moving part.

Can the battery be overcharged if it is plugged in too long?

No, each kit comes with a very specialized and specific charger that will not over charge the battery if left on overnight or for a couple days.

Why chose a DIY kit over an already built e-bike?

The reasons vary, but one of the most common reasons is cost. For example a $700 kit, installed correctly on a bike, might have cost over $2,000 for a similar purchase of an already built e-bike.

How much does it cost to charge a battery?

Anywhere from $0.05 up to $0.20 (mains power) which equals an average efficiency of approx. 700km on $1 (see our website for this calculation)

What are the different battery chemistries?

The different types of battery chemistries that you are likely to come across in your research are: PbSO4 (Sealed Lead acid), LiCoO(Lithium Cobalt Oxide), LiMn2O4 (Lithium Manganese Oxide), LiFePO4(Lithium Iron Phosphate). The differences between these batteries is explained in detail on our website.

Can I charge my battery from a solar system?

Our batteries may be an easy voltage to replicate with an array of solar cells or similar alternative energy systems, but you must always charge the battery using the charger provided. This means you need to use an inverter so you can run the charger normally. Many campers and caravaners have successfully emulated this arrangement to charge their e-bikes.
