Hypodermic Needles Explained

The higher the gauge the smaller the hole – 30g is the finest and 16g is the biggest.

The length of a needle is indicated by the number after the gauge, so a 26g 1/2" is a 26 gauge (0.45mm hole) and is a half inch long (13mm). They also come in different colours for easier identification.

30 gauge (30g 1/2" (13mm), yellow).

These are designed for use on very small veins (blood vessels). They are good for people who have difficulty with their veins. Be careful with these, as they are so fine and sharp it is easy to go right through the vein and out the other side. Blood clots in the needle quite quickly because of the small size.

26 and 27 gauge (26g 1/2" (13mm), 26g 5/8" (16mm), & 27g 1/2" (13mm), brown and grey respectively).

If your veins are in good condition, then the 26 gauge will be the best size for you. If they’re getting a bit tatty, then try the 27 gauge. If you are using steroids sub-cutaneously, then these are good sizes to use.

25 gauge (25g 1 1/2", 25g 1" & 25g 5/8" orange)

This is the only size available for butterflies, but they are also available as regular needles as well. If you have wonderful veins, a regular 25 gauge is fine to use. As a butterfly, they have the advantage that once the needle is in the vein, it won’t move. This makes them ideal for delivering large amounts of fluid (using large barrels) with minimum hassle.

16 to 24 gauges (they range from 1 1/2" to 3/4")

These smaller gauge needles are designed for intra-muscular (for injecting into the muscle) and sub-cutaneous (for injecting into the tissue just under the skin) use.  Most commonly these are used for anabolic steroids without the supervision of a qualified medical professional. They are also used for blood tests.
