Antique French Faience Majolica Albarello Drug Jar |
| Antique Faience Majolica Albarello Apothecary Jar, 16th-17th C. France. Likely made at Nimes or Montpellier, the tin–glazed earthenware vessel of typical form with cylindrical neck, molded shoulders and slight inward curve along the side; the surface painted with three circular reserves and bands of scrollwork in shades of blue, green , yellow, and ocher against a white ground. Unmarked, the underside with remnants of antique paper, possibly an old collection label.
A similar example dating to the Late 16th century can be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum (Museum #C.149-1951)
An Italian word deriving from an Arabic, Albarello means "little tree", named after original containers made from sawn bamboo sections in which, in earlier times, drugs and resins were imported from Asia to Europe. The albarello (or albarello) is the oldest type of pharmacy jar, designed to contain dense, viscous substances. Most albarelli were cylinder-shaped with a wide opening. They were often tapered at the center for easier handling. In the earliest models, the lids consisted of parchment sheets, but later versions had ceramic lids, sometimes fitted with a knob and handles. The Near Eastern style raises the possibility that the albarello reached the West via the Arab invasion of the Mediterranean. But some experts see the albarello as an imitation of the bamboo packaging in which medicinal drugs were shipped from the Orient.

Condition:
Overall, the jar is in fair condition with appropriate signs of age. Nicely worn, the surface of the jar heavily crazed and with scattered chips/losses to the glaze which has speckled imperfections. The top edge/rim with a few surface chips and hairline cracks. The base rim with a few shallow surface chips and considerable shelf-wear.
All major flaws are noted in the condition report above; however, as each of our items is unique and with a history of it’s own, there may be minor flaws and signs of age from years of handing which are not mentioned. Please review all images carefully for an accurate depiction of the condition: |

Return Policy: We offer a seven-day return privilege. All returns must be announced within 7 days (upon receipt) and must be made in compliance with our return policies (listed below). Items being returned must be packed and shipped in the original packaging and box.
If there is a marked discrepancy between the item you receive and the item as described in the listing online, we offer a full refund of the purchase price as well as original shipping costs. However, If the item’s condition is as it was represented in the listing, but you are not happy with your purchase for whatever reason, we’ll be able to refund the purchase price (but not the shipping/packing costs) less a 10% restocking fee as long as you let us know within seven-days upon receipt of the item. Refunds will be made upon receipt and inspection of the item and will be made in the manner in which the payment was received.
International Customers Please Note: Due to the high costs of shipping overseas, we are only able to refund the purchase price of the item, and not the shipping costs, for any item being returned.
Condition: We spend a lot of time describing each item accurately and want you to know exactly what you are buying. If you ever feel an item you bought was misrepresented or not what you expected, please contact us immediately and we will work with you to correct the situation.

| Payments must be made within 3 days of purchase. If you are unable to pay for the item within 3 days, please contact us though eBay. If your payment has not been received and we have not heard from you within 5 days of purchase, we will file a non-paying bidder alert through eBay.
Payments must be made through PayPal. This is very easy to use and you can use your preferred credit card. Personal checks are not accepted under any circumstances and we cannot ship any item until a payment has cleared.
Sales Tax: Buyer must pay sales tax if the item is shipped within or picked up in New York State (8.375%). If you are a dealer and have a NY resale number, please contact us by phone or eBay messages to send a scanned copy of Form ST-120 (resale certificate) for our records.
Shipping

Our default domestic shipping method is either USPS Priority Mail or UPS Ground with Signature Required (please be sure that someone will be available to sign for the package). Our default international shipping carrier is USPS Priority Express International (the most reliable option providing a tracking number). Our posted shipping rates includes packing materials and insurance; however, we reserve the right to adjust the shipping cost in the event the actual cost is significantly higher.
Shipping Time: Our items are generally shipped out within 1-3 Business Days from the receipt/ clearing of payment. Domestic orders should arrive in 2-5 business days, while International orders may take a week or longer. We will send you a tracking number as confirmation as soon as your item is shipped.
Special Requests: If you need an item shipped to meet a specific schedule due to an event or traveling plans, please contact us and we will try to accommodate to the best of our ability. We are happy to combine shipping/packing for customers who purchase multiple items (when possible).
International Orders: Due to the fragile nature of our inventory, we require that all items shipped internationally be mailed using a mail service providing tracking information as well as insurance. Please do not ask us to ship via Economy service or Parcel Post. USPS’s flat-rate boxes are appealingly inexpensive; however, their racking numbers are useless once they leave the US, so we will not ship by this means under any circumstance. We will not designate any item as a "gift" or mark the value of the item less than the actual cost of the item when it was sold at auction. This is both against the law and eBay policy, so these requests will be ignored. However, at the customers request we will be happy to highlight any item as an "antique" or "100+ years old" if this is in fact true.
Customs/ VAT Taxes/Duties: International shipments are often held and inspected by Customs officials and may be subject to additional taxes/fees before they are released. We cannot anticipate VAT or other foreign duties. If you are an international customer, please be aware that your country may assess import duties/taxes. Any taxes or fees assessed on an item are the sole responsibility of the buyer as per eBay policy. If a shipment is refused by the buyer and returned to us, we will not refund shipping costs. If a parcel is stuck in custom's or lost, we will work with you to resolve the matter as quickly as possible; however, this process can take several weeks and a refund will only be issued after we have filed an inquiry and insurance claim.
Returned Packages: We are not responsible for any item returned to us as "undeliverable" if the address provided by the customer matches the address provided by eBay on your account. In this event, the customer is required to provide an alternate shipping address and cover the additional shipping costs before the item will be shipped again. If you wish to send the item to your work or a different address, please contact us immediately after purchasing the item so we can update the shipping label.
Lost or Damaged Items: Unfortunately, boxes are occasionally lost, damaged or go missing during transit. In the event of loss or item damage, we are required to notify the carrier so that a trace can be started. Following their procedure, the insurance claim can usually be filed no sooner than one (1) month after the carrier has started their trace of the package. The customer will be refunded only after the insurance claim has been completed.
