Original 1923 GREAT WALL OF CHINA Panorama Photo Print Badaling Nankow Pass
Dramatic
fold-out photogravure 180° panorama of the Great Wall of China at
Badaling, printed in 1923.
This view measures 115.6 x 24.1 cm [45½" x
9½"] and was published by the National
Geographic Society in February 1923. It is titled The Great
Wall of China Near Nankow Pass.
The photographer is not identified, but the image was likely taken with
a Cirkut Rotation Camera, patented by
the Rochester Panoramic Company in 1904 and produced for the Eastman
Kodak Company.
The sweep of the Cirkut's 180° rotation dramatically encompasses the
North Mountain on the right
and the South Mountain on the left, with the lowest part of the
strategic pass in between.
This black-and-white image has extraordinary clarity and detail,
revealing the shades of
quarried
granite blocks on the wall's face and individual bricks on the tower
closest to the camera. It depicts this portion of the Great Wall as it
looked more than 93 years ago.
Condition: This print is in excellent condition,
bright and clean, with no marks, rips, or tears. It
is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side, and it folds to approximately 9½" x 5¾".
