Established in 1840 by Samuel Cunard, and is one of the oldest companies in the passenger shipping industry.
Originally named British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company,
the name was changed to the Cunard Steamship Company, Limited in 1878.

In 1934 the Cunard and White Star Lines were merged forming Cunard-White Star Limited
but White Star ships continued to sail under their own livery.
Another name change took place in 1949 to the Cunard Steam-Ship Company Limited
(by the mid 50's White Star name was totally gone) and, in 1962, to Cunard Line Limited.

In May 1983 Cunard purchased Norwegian American Cruises, the acquisition included the ms Sagafjord and ms Vistafjord.

Cunard was acquired by Carnival Corporation in 1998, Cunard operated the world-famous Queen Elizabeth 2,
(until November 2008) the last ship to cross the Atlantic on a regular basis.

Presently Cunard operates the Queen Mary 2 (January 2004), Queen Victoria (January 2008)
and the brand new Queen Elizabeth which debuted in October 2010.
