California does not allow seed chestnuts to be shipped into California.

These are believed to be about 95% American Chestnut tree fresh nuts. They are alive and can be planted to grow your own trees.

You will receive 200 three-hundred seed nuts. These seeds come from a hollow in Michigan that was the location of an American Chestnut grove. It is believed that the owner brought in Asian and European chestnut trees in the 1870s or there abouts.

The trees readily hybridize and the offspring continued to grow and cross after the nut production was discontinued.

There are several different types of chestnut trees at this location, probably integrates of the three localities (American, European and Asian).

Therefore I am fairly certain that these nuts are 95% or so American Chestnuts and they seem to be be blight resistant.

The American Chestnut is perhaps the best tasting nut in the world.

The shell is so thin you can easily scrape it open with your thumbnail.

The taste is excellent and there is a great demand that is growing for these nuts in a variety of dishes.

American Chestnuts generally sell for up to $35-$50 per pound to upscale restaurants and produce stores.

According to research done by Bill Bryson (Author of Appalachian Trail & Many other books) the American Chestnut had more mass than any other tree except for the Giant Sequoia Redwood.

American Chestnuts were the main tree in the eastern USA numbering between 3.5-4.0 BILLION!

They grew over 10 stories tall and commonly had trunks that were upwards of 10 feet in diameter, with a large canopy that could cover more than an acre with over one million leaves.

In the 1800s an Asian blight began killing the trees until only about a few hundred remained. Through cross breeding, integrades of the American Chestnut survive as well as some pure strains (but these are mostly susceptible to the killing blight).

Another interesting note is that the commonly accepted idea that the passenger pigeon was hunted to extinction is probably not correct. The demise of the passenger pigeons paralleled that of the extinction of the American Chestnut which was its main food source.

Nuts can grow from trees planted as seed in as little as 7 years but it may take 10 or more depending on growth rate.

They make beautiful shade trees and the nuts are delicious fresh and easier to open the shell of than any other nut by far.

Their unique properties allow them to be dried and ground into flour as the Native Americans did. They also can be roasted to a taste beyond delight. Additionally they are also a great stew or soup additive not to mention a blessing to stuffings.

The listing is for 200 seed nuts that should be refrigerated or planted right away. They can be planted any time of the year as long as the ground is not frozen. The American Chestnuts were native from Florida to Michigan, Minnesota to Maine so they can do well almost anywhere. If your ground is frozen you could start them indoors and plant them outside in the spring, which may give the tree a head start on growth and nut production.

These nuts are freshly gathered and contain no pesticides, poisons, fungicides or any of that stuff, so they are safe to be handled and could be eaten if you like, but I am selling them as seed nuts to try and help get the trees growing again.

It could be a very good long term investment because you could harvest and sell the nuts once the trees come into production.

Also the wood is quite valuable-just search ebay for American Chestnut Boards and see how valuable the wood is.

In November 2007 I planted some seed nuts. The seedlings did not appear through the surface until July which is a long germination rate. I have added a few pictures of a couple of the American Chestnut seedlings. My germination rate was about 10%. Other people have had germination rates of 0%-90%. I planted them in a high clay soil and they prefer a bit more sand according to what I have been told. The two pictures of seedlings are some of those seed nuts that I planted.

In Fall 2008 I planted seed nuts and in Spring 2009 I planted some refrigerated nuts from Fall 2008. The germination on the Fall 2008 was about 65%, but the planting of the same batch of seed nuts that were refrigerated until May 2009 had a germination of about 85%. I am not sure why that occurred. Both broke the ground surface in June.

Fall 2009 I planted some seeds fresh from the tree. I also refrigerated some seeds and planted them in spring of 2010. The fall planted seeds germinated at about 80% and the refrigerated seeds at about 85%. The 2011 crop has about 75% germination (we had a bad year for fall 2010 with very few nuts).

Consequently it seems that refrigerating the seeds may increase their viability. Because of this I will be refrigerating all seeds as soon as harvested to assure you the best germination rate.

Seed chestnuts collected Fall 2011 were all refrigerated. The 2011 seed chestnut germination rate for Summer 2012 was about 80%.

Seed germination for 2013 from the 2012 harvest was about 85%.

Seed germination for 2014 from 2013 harvest was about 90%.

Seed germination for 2015 from 2014 harvest was about 82%.

Seed germination from 2016 was the lowest ever about 60%. (hopefully this will be a better year)

Out of the 7 chestnuts you sent me back in October 5 of them germinated. I now have 4 seedlings measuring 2 - 10 inches tall and a 5th seed that's just now sprouting. Wanted to let you know how your seed does in zone 4. I bought 48 seed from you 4 years ago, direct seeded some that fall, and house started the rest in January, planted out the following June. At 3 years old, about a third of your seedlings produced catkins, but not any female flowers. This year several produced nuts, looking identical in size to those I planted of yours. I grow several varieties of chestnut , including pure wild american. There are no wild trees in my county although there are some in nearby counties consequently my garden started clean . I began volunteer work learning to pollinate , with the american chestnut foundation 2 years ago. i was exposed to blight in their test orchards and contaminated my tree nursery. Some of the pure americans were killed by this. Your trees however are 100% blight free. They also are the earliest to reach reproductive maturity of all I grow. They also demonstrate a strong resistance to insect damage(gypsy moth) compared to american. Received 10-2-2015
