A fine and rare full-length mid-to-late 15th Century Continental woodcarving of an Apostle, possibly Saint Paul, circa 1450-80.
We had to buy him as we were drawn to his wonderful beard
and hair!
Paul the Apostle, commonly known as Saint
Paul, and also known by his native name Saul of Tarsus was
an apostle (though not one of the Twelve Apostles) who
taught the gospel of the Christ to the 1st-century
world. He is generally considered one of the most important figures of
the Apostolic Age. In the mid-30s to the mid-50s AD, he founded
several churches in Asia Minor and Europe. Paul took advantage of his
status as both a Jew and a Roman citizen to minister to
both Jewish and Roman audiences.
He is often portrayed with a beard, bearing a book in his
left hand and sword to his right hand.
Carrying significant levels of original polychrome.
Condition - Good overall. Surface wear and
loss of right hand.
Dimension - Height 24”
