STATUTE OF KALISZ
ARTHUR SZYK

First in 85 years since 1932 when the original one was produced!!!!

Arthur Szyk's "Statute of Kalisz," was created between 1926-1928.
Along with his later work, the "Haggadah", it is one of his most significant works - as well as being central to Polish culture.
It is an act of historical tolerance and a permanent tribute to Polish-Jewish relations.

Its printing, using precise technology, took three years and was completed on January 25, 1932 at the F. Bruckmann SA in Munich, for the Round Table Publishing House in Paris. The whole consists of 45 loose cards and one more which serves as a colophon, giving a brief description of the manuscript. They are placed in a rigid red cardboard  box on which is embossed a gold-colored eagle crowned with three coats of arms; Pogon, Archangel and Griffin.

The reprint of the Statute of Kalisz is based on one of the few surviving original copies.

Size of cards: 15" x 12 1/2".

Along with a book: "Historia Statutu Kaliskiego księcia Bolesława Pobożnego z roku 1264 i jego iluminacji przez Artura Szyka w latach 1926-1928" ("The History of the Statute of Kalisz by Duke Boleslaw the Pious, from the year 1264 and its illumination by Arthur Szyk in the years 1926 to 1928") in Polish, with some articles in English and a brochure issued in 2013, with detailed description of each card (Text in English and Polish)

Developed by Marian Fuks, Alexander B. Skotnicki, Joanna and Mark Szukalak the book is a guide to the miniature symbols in the texts of the greatest illuminator of the twentieth century - Arthur Szyk.
To quote the opinion of one of today's enthusiasts of A. Szyk; "The guide to the Statute is fantastic! Without it, it would be only a portfolio of color images, which would bore after a few illustrations. "

From the first pages, the authors flood us with information on the history of Poland, in the thirteenth century -with privileges being assigned to the Jews by Duke Boleslaw the Pious of Kalisz- as well as in the twentieth century. They emphasize the importance the original Statute played in creating an international agreement in the world. The authors cite paragraphs from the Statute of Kalisz on the Privileges and Responsibilities of Jews.- in Polish, as well as in Latin, as translated by Dr. Krzysztof Pawlowski from the Medieval Latin Laboratory Sciences.

This knowledge is necessary for the analysis of certain individual cards from the Statute presented later in this publication, thanks to which the rich mosaic of symbols is no longer a mystery.

 Size of the box: 16" x 14" x  2". Weight: 6  lbs.
