The Boeing CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter has served the US Navy and Marine Corps faithfully since the early 1960s. This venerable aircraft's primary mission areas in the Navy (as the H-46D) include, Combat Logistics Support and Vertical Replenishment (VERTREP), Search and Rescue, and Special Operations. As a Marine Corps platform. The Ch-46 "Sea Knight" helicopter is one of the largest helicopters in the US Navy inventory. The "Sea Knight" is a twin-turbine powered, dual-piloted, tandem rotor helicopter. First flight in1962 and first procured in 1964. The unique tandem-rotor design of the Sea Knight permits increased agility and superior handling qualities in relatively strong winds from all directions. This allows, in particular, rapid direction changes during low airsoeed maneuvering. This capibility has resulted in the safe, efficien, and graceful transfer of many milions of tons of cargo and many thousands of passengers over the years.

Originally designed as a twin-turbine commercial transport helicopter, the CH-46 Sea Knight was first flown on April 22nd, 1958. The Sea Knight's tandem rotor configuration is unique among contemporary Navy and Marine helicopters, giving this aircraft increased agility and the ability to fly in strong, multidirectional winds. The Sea Knight can land in water and stay afloat in two foot seas for up to two hours. It also has fixed tricycle landing gear, which makes it easy for crews to load and unload cargo. The Navy relies on Sea Knights for shipboard delivery of cargo and personnel, and the Marines use it primarily to transport troops, equipment and supplies.
