Superb modeling and painting on this sweet piece. With the typical china doll
Conta Boehme face, and beautiful plum-pink wings. He is laughing, a very happy Cupid
He carries symbolic gifts - a cradle and shoe.
The Victorians were big on symbolism- One of their favorite symbols: the shoe! The Victorians considered shoes a sign of good luck. Instead of throwing her bouquet over her shoulder, a bride originally threw one of her shoes. Shoes were tossed after newlywed couples as they departed the wedding to ensure good luck. If the shoe hit the bride or groom, that was more fortunate still! Ouch, I can see why lucky shoe throwing has fallen out of favor – today shoes are tied to the back of the couple's car to painlessly carry on the tradition. The cradle symbolizes a new life or a new beginning. So when the little love god Cupid offers both a shoe and a cradle, it means the recipient will be lucky and will have a new beginning, a rebirth if you will, a whole new world. So when this lovely little cupid offers you both a shoe and a cradle, don't accept unless you are ready for the consequences : )
I love that he is glancing up, so he looks great on bedside table or dresser, smiling sweetly up at you. The cradle can be used as a posy vase or trinket /jewelry tray.
