Description: This great
pair of vintage “Catalina” swim trunks has the classic Catalina “Flying Fish”
logo sewn to the front. It has an inside
drawstring and a small inside pocket for keys/coins (see photos). The drawstring is very unusual because it
says “J.G. MacPhee” repeated along the entire length; perhaps this was the
original owner’s name. A rear inside tag
says “Catalina, A California Creator” on one side and “Styled for the Stars of
Hollywood, Los Angeles, Calif. Made in U.S.A.” on the other side (see
photos). The number “9” is hand-written
on the inside waist above the tag and may have referred to the original owner’s
swim team number. There is an inside
front modesty liner (see photos). The
fabric is not identified, but it looks and feels like “Lastex.” The style is
typical 1950s Midcentury era.
Size: The size identified
on the inside tag is “30” (see photos). However,
the waist measures about 34 inches around unstretched and will stretch to about
38 inches; can be smaller if you cinch the drawstring. The outside leg measures about 6.5 inches
long. The top waist to bottom of crotch
measures about 11 inches. Based on these
measurements, I judge these to fit a Size Medium man.
Condition: This garment
is in very good condition but shows clear evidence of past use. As indicated above, the number “9” is
hand-written on the inside rear waist, possibly indicating the original owner’s
team number. The backside has a number of small brown “freckles” (see photos). There are also a couple of spots on the
inside liner and the inside rear (see photos).
There are a few loose threads.
However, the overall condition of this garment is very good.
