Serial number: 612384
Year of production: 1961
Made in USSR by Zavod Arsenal

Condition:
This lens is in decent condition for its age. Aperture ring moves extremely smoothly. Focusing is a bit stiff, but this is manageable. There is no oil on aperture blades. Glass is generally clean and clear. There is one small air bubble and a few specks of dust. There is no haze. Front element has very fine cleaning marks. There are first signs of very light fungus on the borders of the front element. None of the described are affecting the quality of images taken with this lens, judging by all the test photos I have taken with this lens so far, but you may want to service the lens in the future. This lens has just been used a lot over the last 56 years - normally a very good sign of its performance.

Test photos were taken with Sony A7 using Nikon S to NEX adapter at one aperture setting (f2).

This lens fits Contax / Kiev / Nikon S bayonet mount rangefinder cameras, but with a suitable adapter it can also be used on modern mirrorless cameras.

Lens comes with front and rear lens caps (front cap has original Zavod Arsenal logo) and 85mm viewfinder in original bakelite box (both made by ROMZ - Rostov Optical and Mechanical Factory, best known for making 35mm and 85mm accessory finders for FED and Zorki cameras).

About the lens:
The Jupiter-9 is a copy of the pre-war Zeiss Sonnar 85mm f/2. Red P, according to available information, stands for higher quality optics, according to some original Zeiss glass was used in making of these lenses. This Jupiter-9 was manufactured by Zavod Arsenal. Arsenal, based in Kiev in the Ukraine, is best known for cloning some pretty good cameras: Hasselblads, Contaxes, Nikons and Pentacon Sixes. Most of them weren't copied directly and were simplified for production behind the Iron Curtain, but some (the Contax clones in particular) were pretty decent. Arsenal also created one of the most original of all cameras: the Kiev-10.

This lens has unique bokeh and is great for portrait work.
