Les Paul Traditional 1960 Zebra
Although it vanished from the Gibson catalog after 1960, the classic
single-cutaway Les Paul Standard came roaring back in the mid-to-late
’60s to establish itself as the most powerful electric guitar in rock.
Eric Clapton has long raved about the slim, fast 1960-profile neck on
his stolen “Beano” ’Burst, and everyone from Mike Bloomfield to Jimmy
Page to Jeff Beck also picked up a Les Paul Standard to lay down rock
foundations that have never been shaken. Along with enjoying the
unparalleled playability of the instrument, these players often removed
the covers on their PAF humbucking pickups to eek out a slightly sharper
high-end response—and when they did so, they were hoping to discover
the ultimate badge of cool in a 1958-’60 Burst: the zebra-coil pickup.
To celebrate the age when the Les Paul first took the throne as the king
of rock, Gibson USA introduces the Les Paul Traditional 1960 Zebra
Coils. With all of the classic appointments of the most desirable 1960
Standards, it takes you straight to the heart of the golden age of rock.
Great tonewoods are always the first step in crafting a great Gibson,
and the Les Paul Traditional 1960 Zebra Coils is no exception. A carved
Grade-A maple top is glued to a weight-relieved Grade-A mahogany body,
and treated to a genuine nitrocellulose lacquer finish in your choice of
grain-textured satin Honeyburst or satin Goldtop, or high-gloss Trans
Red. A one-piece, quarter-sawn, Grade-A mahogany neck is carved to an
authentic ’60-style profile with depths of .800” at the 1st fret and
.875” at the 12th, and capped with a baked maple fingerboard with 22
medium-jumbo frets and Gibson’s beloved 12” radius for easy, choke-free
bending. Topped off with a 17-degree back-angled headstock for optimum
pressure in the slots of the guitar’s PLEK-cut Corian® nut—key
components of the Les Paul’s superior resonance and sustain—it all adds
up to a singing, toneful instrument even before you plug it in.
But plug it in you will, and when you do, the Les Paul Traditional 1960
Zebra Coils roars to life with all the depth, richness and clarity of a
great PAF-loaded ’Burst. A ’57 Classic in the neck position with exposed
zebra-coil bobbins offers sweet, warm vocal tones, and a slightly
hotter ’57 Classic Plus in the bridge—also featuring zebra-coils—gives
you gutsy crunch and soaring lead tones. These acclaimed humbuckers are
made with genuine Alnico V magnets and wound with 42 AWG wire, just like
the legendary PAFs of the early ’60s, and offer a blend of depth and
clarity that few pickups can match today. Tonal solidity and sustain are
further ensured by a Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece, while a
set of vintage-look Tone Pros vintage style tuners with pearloid
buttons take the traditional look right over the top. Further classic
appointments include acrylic trapezoid fingerboard inlays, vintage cream
neck and body binding and pickguard, a mother-of-pearl Gibson headstock
logo and silkscreened gold “Les Paul Model,” and gold top-hat knobs.
Get your rock on, pure-1960 style, with the Les Paul Traditional 1960
Zebra Coils, crafted by Gibson USA.
