IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY AND FUNCTIONALITY FACTS

This Antenna kit has been throughly tested and found to work successfully with a large number of software/hardware configurations. Occasionally, a particular configuration may cause this device to function improperly or not function at all.

Incompatibilites while rare, do exist through no fault of the buyer or seller. In this instance, the only option is to return the device for a 100% refund. Please review our return guidlines below.

Because of the complexities involved with WiFi connections, this device's failure or inability to find or connect to "Hot Spots" or acceptable and approved wireless networks does not necessarily indicate a defective product.

Please read our entire listing for additional information concerning factors which affect your ability to connect successfully.

The 802.11b, g, n WiFi protocols themselves are designed for distances usually under 800 feet under ideal conditions.

This limitation helps to reduce WiFi frequency congestion in the 2.4gHz band. A frequency spectrum which all ready is over crowded.
For this, or any WiFi antenna to achieve optimal performance, it is absolutely necessary to have a line of sight unobstructed view between both your antenna and the "Hot Spot" your attempting to connect to. Buildings, trees, bushes, vehicles and hills all degrade the signal. Dramatically limiting the usable distance.
Another determining factor is the "Hot Spot" itself. What type of Router/AP equipment, Antenna location indoor/outdoor, WiFi protocol used, 802.11b,g,n.
A reasonably analogy would be this. Imagine the WiFi signal as a beam of light from a flashlight. The beam only goes stright, the beam widens and gets weaker the further you shine it, and any obstructions will block the light.

Comparisons Between Antennas

The technical criteria which must be considered when attempting to make comparisons between antennas is very important. There are several different designs, and all have specific strengths and weaknesses.  So it is important to compare antennas of the same design.

As an example, attempting to compare an Omni-Directional antenna to a Directional antenna is like comparing apples with oranges. They are both fruits, but that is where the similarity ends. At 1st apperance, an omni antenna will most likely display an availability of more wireless networks in the list. This is because it is theoretically designed to receive

signal equally in all directions. This design is best for connecting to multiple networks that are all in different directions.

A directional antenna focuses it's power towards a specific direction. Signals off the sides and back are reduced. As a result, fewer available networks will be displayed until the antenna is rotated towards a different direction.

Signal strength readings using the Windows Wireless Utility or a 3rd Party utility tells only part of the story.

It is important to evaluate link quality and through-put. These specifications provide a much more accurate measurement of performance. These measurements can only be assessed after establishing a connection to the signal source, and only with the correct software. Other important specifications which need to be compared are; Gain, Antenna Front to Side and Front to Back ratios, and Beam Width. And, the type and power of the internal transceiver installed. These specifications all affect connectivity and range performance. And can not be rated or compared using simple software.

Finally, the Windows utility only provides a relative view of your received signal. Most people do not consider the antenna's transmit side. IE... how well the antenna is sending the signal TO the "Hot Spot" And the quality of that signal received by the AP or router. Judging only an antennas ability to receive, is like judging only one event in the entire Olympics.

We provide additional information at the end of this listing pertaining to factors affecting connectivity, distance and performance. Look for; "Imporant ! Please read all of the following information"  below.

What is "Zero-Loss" Design?
Older less efficient WiFi antenna kits place significant distance between the USB adapter and antenna through the use of coaxial cable. As a result, the high frequency 2.4Ghz signal is not down converted and translated to USB for a considerable distance. This high frequency signal between the antenna and adapter is attenuated as it propagates or moves, through the length of coaxial cable. This is commonly referred to as cable loss. Unfortunately, there is always a percentage of antenna gain sacrificed in cable loss.

How does "Zero-Loss" design resolve this issue? Simple.

The antenna and USB adapter are integrated into one unit. This permits, virtually "Zero-Loss" between the antenna and USB adapter. Less expensive and longer USB cable runs can be achieved with absolute minimal impact on overall performance.

Access Point emulation (Soft AP) is used to share one Internet connection between two or more computers. Install AP on the Host, or one computer which has access to the internet through a ethernet cable or wireless. Once turned on, Soft AP configures your WiFi USB Antenna to become a wireless Access Point. Broadcasting a Wi-Fi signal, that other computers with wireless adapters can find and can connect to.
Enabling anyone to surf the Internet through the AP, just like connecting to a wireless router signal.
Soft AP is an inexpensive easy-to-use software application that turns any PC or laptop into a Wi-Fi wireless access point.
Anyone nearby can surf the Internet through your connection. You may also use your iPhone, PDA, or mobile to connect wirelessly through the network broadcasted by Soft AP.

IMPORTANT ! Please read all of the following information

  • We ask all potential customers to evaluate their area for proximity to "Hot Spots" or acceptable and approved wireless networks, before purchasing this device. This can be achieved simply by using the existing wireless card in a laptop and walking around your area looking for "Hot Spots" or acceptable and approved networks to connect to. During your preliminary search, take notice to the locations in your area which yields the strongest signal or signals. This is important because the panel antenna is directional, and once installed at your location, must be faced towards the signal source you wish to connect to.
  • This devices failure or inability to find or connect to "Hot Spots" or acceptable and approved wireless networks does not necessarily indicate a defective product.

Please remember, a significant number of factors affect transmission distance;

  • Indoor vs Outdoor, Outdoor Optimal
  • Weather
  • Line of sight / Physical obstructions
  • Transmission Mode / Configuration
  • AP or router location
  • AP or Router antenna type & gain
  • Signal output level
  • Reciever sensitivity
  • WiFi 802.11 operating band
  • Wireless congestion
  • Frequency interference
  • Encryption method

All these factors contribute to the overall quality of your wireless connection. Having optimal conditons in all these catagories is essential for reliable connections at the furthest distances.

It is also important to understand, that there are factors which affect your ability to connect to wireless networks, even when they are visible and appear strong.

  • Security-Enabled Networks. Knowing the alpha-numeric key is necessary before connection can be achieved.
  • MAC Address Filtering. Unsecured networks which have MAC Address filtering enabled, will not permit you to connect unless your wireless adapter MAC address is registered with the Network administrator.
  • SSID Disabled. Most wireless access points (APs) and routers automatically transmit their network name or SSID (Service Set Identifier) into open air at regular intervals, usually every few seconds. This feature of WiFi network protocols is intended to allow clients to dynamically discover and roam between WLANs. If the network administrator disables this function, your wireless utility will not discover this signal. What you can’t see, you can’t connect to.
  • Critical Antenna Placement. Many networks which may have been be visible on your laptop omni-directional antenna may not be visible with this Panel antenna until it is positioned properly. This WiFi USB antenna is highly directional. It transmits and receives signals from only one side of the panel. Due to this directional narrow beamwidth pattern, these antenna must be positioned with the ABS side towards the signal source you wish to connect to. When the USB cable is pointing to the ground, the antenna is situated to receive a vertically polarized signal. Turn the antenna 90 degrees, and it is situated to receive a horizontally polarized signal.

The overall strength of the connection depends on the weakest link between the two devices. Please contact us for more details.

One Final Note;

Wireless technology simplifies the sharing of network connections between multiple computers and people. Even if you don't subscribe to Internet service, you can log on to public hot-spots or to a neighbor's wireless access point to get online. However, using someone else's Internet service isn't always a good idea. It may even be illegal. Just as entering a home or business without the owner's permission is considered trespassing (even if the doors are unlocked), likewise, accessing wireless Internet connections (even open access ones) can be considered an illegal activity. At a minimum, obtain consent from the operator of any Wi-Fi access point before using their service. Read any online Terms of Service documentation carefully when signing on, and contact the owner offline if necessary to ensure compliance. Remember, unauthorized connections may be illegal, subjecting you to penalties in the form of fines and/or imprisonment.
