How to Care for a Black Cobra Pepper

sprout Black Cobra chili seeds by soaking them overnight in warm water in an insulated container. Sow two seeds each into peat starter pots and keep them in a warm area until they sprout and have four leaves each. Fertilize weekly with one-fourth-strength chili plant food. Seedlings are ready to transplant four to six weeks after they sprout.

2

Mix 3 parts potting soil with 1 part sand. Fill a large container with drainage holes in the bottom with the soil. It is important that the Black Cobra pepper has good drainage. Leaving the root ball intact, transplant one Black Cobra pepper seedling into the pot and pack the soil firmly around it. The Black Cobra chili pepper matures in 90 to 100 days.

3

Place the container in a sunny, warm area indoors such as a sun room or greenhouse. Give the Black Cobra chili full sun. Keep the daytime temperature between 68 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit for the growing season. Keep nighttime temperatures under 75 degrees Fahrenheit. In summer, you can move the container outdoors as long as you bring them inside at night for the first week.

4

Water the Black Cobra chili often enough to keep the soil moist but not wet.

5

Insert a garden stake into the soil next to the Black Cobra chili pepper plant without damaging the roots. Tie the main stem of the plant loosely to the stake to lend it support.

6

Fertilize the plant with a specialty chili plant food mixed and applied according to label directions. Do not overfertilize.

7

Shake the Black Cobra plant gently when it is in flower to help it self-pollinate.

8

Allow the fruit to turn from black to red before harvesting it.

9

Keep the container inside during the winter. Maintain a temperature of not less than 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The plant will experience some dieback, but it is perennial and should reinvigorate itself the next spring.
