The Humble Hairpin
The hairpin leg was the very first table leg we started making – and we’re not too shy to admit that we were the first in Europe to start selling them. The design was originally dreamt up by celebrated architect Henry Glass in the 1940s, and we’ve honed the style to be perfectly suited to today’s mid-century resurgence.
The legs are moreishly simple, and understatedly elegant, so lend themselves to a huge range of refurbished furniture projects. We craft and stock all sizes, from the diddy 10cm foot, to the stunningly long and sleek 86cm bar leg. 10mm hairpins will suit lighter desks and tables up to 45kg – but the 12mm legs will give your project real strength and stability if the budget allows. Our stainless steel option will even allow you to continue the hairpin theme into the great outdoors!
Who is Wicked?
At Wicked, we’re all about encouraging you to make stuff. In fact, our design strategy (if you can call it that) has always been to make stuff that we like, and make it exceptionally well, so that you can go ahead and use it to make your own cool stuff.
Sounds good, right?
We’re genuinely energised by newness – whether that be a new design we’re working on, a new machine in the workshop, or (let’s be honest) a new recipe we tried for dinner last night. It keeps us striving to create things, and take inspiration from the everyday rather than following trends.
FAQ
What type of fixing / screws should I use?
A well fixed leg is essential to get maximum strength and rigidity. There are many options available - a no.5 wood screw is perfect for the job. To get an extra strong, professional fixing we would recommend using nutserts and M5 bolts.
How much weight can the legs hold?
Weight tolerances vary depending on the legs you choose, and the size of your table top. Check out the table below for more guidance or just get in touch with any questions – we can always rope in Toby (our head carpenter) to advise you on your specific project.
What type of metal are your table legs made from?
Here at Wicked Hairpins we take our metals quite seriously... perhaps too seriously :) To this end we only ever use furniture grade, cold rolled steel to create our table legs. All metalwork is laser cut to ensure that the final product is up to the exacting standards required for indoor use. Unless listed as stainless, all steel is mild steel.
Where do you get your materials from?
We’re passionate about keeping it local, and source all of our materials from suppliers in the UK. Our copper legs are even plated in the building next door to ours! We like to think of ourselves as running an old-style family business with a contemporary, fresh approach – it keeps us grounded, while constantly pushing forward.
Can I have a custom size?
First class customer support coupled with in house design and product development means we're here for any customisation you may need, so just get in touch.
Which payment methods do you accept?
We accept Paypal, Visa, Visa Electron, MasterCard, Solo, Maestro, American Express – all payments processed by Paypal.
What protective coating does your steel have?
There are strict rules regarding what chemicals are suitable for indoor use. Our powder coat and oils are extremely safe which is the reason they are used across the metalworking industry. Wherever you purchase your hairpins make sure the manufacturer clearly states what product they are using - finishes MUST be child and pet safe on furniture products and they must be extremely low in volatile organic compounds (VOC's)!
Do you offer discounts on large orders?
Yes. We can ship large orders same day also.
What shippers do you use?
For our table legs we use DPD (UK 1 day service, Europe 2-3 day service) and UPS (Worldwide 3-5 day service). Within the UK customers are given a 1 hour delivery window so no need to wait in all day. If you would prefer to drop by and collect then just let us know beforehand. In most cases our furniture range is shipped via TNT.
Are your legs suitable for a commercial environment?
We're proud to manufacture under strict ISO9000 standards, so you’re safe in our well-worn hands. Just get in touch for details on large-scale interior projects.
