Who is Jim Thompson?

Jim Thompson (1906-1967) was a famous American in Thailand ... best known for sure.

While he was an architect in New York before World War II, Jim Thompson closed his practice and enlisted in the U.S. Army, fought in the campaign in Europe, Asia and arrived with a contingent whose objective was restore the independence and freedom of Thailand then occupied by the Japanese army.

However the war ended before the start of operations. He arrived shortly after in Bangkok as intelligence officer of the OSS (later CIA).

When he left the army, he decided to return to Thailand and live there, He developed a passion for hand-woven silk developed to focus on the revival of this craft obsolete.

Draftsman and colorist talent, his participation was fundamental to the revival of Thai silk weaving and the international reputation she acquired. Since his arrival in the country, Thompson began collecting pieces of Thai silk.

She seduces him by his surprising color combinations and the uneven texture that distinguishes it from Japanese or Chinese silks, more flexible. In 1947, decided to sell Thai silk, Thompson flew to New York, a suitcase full of samples of silk. A fashion editor is passionate about fabrics and immediately offered him his support.

Back in Thailand, he created a company of which he is majority shareholder and director.

Jim Thompson stores: In early 1950, Thompson opened his first shop in Bangkok that had a huge success.

Soon he is visited by Queen Sirikit, who has never worked hard to promote crafts and cultural heritage Thais.
