**** This Four (4) CD Disc Set is 'Complete' with the Ultra-Rare!!! &
Out Of Print Bonus Disc CD! ****
This 4-Disc Set might just very-well be a snapshot of the Grateful Dead at their Absolute-Best! Despite the very valid arguments that the Band hit their 1st
"Prime" in 1968-69, I tend to side with the idea that this was their
1st "Big Prime". So, to be fair - if somewhere in Spring '68 to
Fall '69 was their 1st Prime, then the mid-1970's was undoubtedly their
2nd. Also, if somebody said this was the very best Road Trips release, I
probably wouldn't really argue with that claim. What you have here is an
incredible mix of material (most of the vital material (song selections) from
this period included, for the most part), and the digitally remastered sound is
simply the Bomb - period. You just can't hate digital technology, when
it delivers Dead sounding like this for us. There's a theory out there
that every one of the "Best Bands Ever", all hit their prime in (or right close
around) their 7th year together, and for many of them it also strangely
happened on, or right around 1970 (that is, unless you’re the Beatles and 1970
meant 'break-up' - but it still doesn't mean Let It Be wasn't great. Not
only are the Grateful Dead in an unprecedented Prime form in 1970 from a
standpoint of sound, tone, music & song creativity, being able to read each
other musically, fan-base wise, etc.. But, this period is the period
where Both! Acoustic & Electric performances occurred Live!!! Also,
you’re talking about both Workingman's Dead & American Beauty being freshly
in the arsenal. And I know some fans feel Workingman's was the Dead's
best album. The concept of getting an Acoustic versions of I Know You
Rider, Long Black Limousine, Casey Jones (ballad of), Silver Threads/Golden
Needles, FOTD, Uncle John's, Cumberland, Voice on High, Attics, and last but
not least Cold Jordan, and then the band turns right around and melts your mind
(and keeps your shoes shaking) with rocking, powerful/energetic & basically
air-tight Electric Grateful Dead. You know, the big stuff -- New Speedway
Boogie, St. Stephen > Other One > Cosmic Charlie, Hard to Handle, Morning
Dew -- even Darkstar > St. Stephen > Not Fade Away > Lovelight.
Just Wow, I mean Wow - completely Wow. Not to spoil the goods too much as
they all speak for themselves anyways, but you actually get two (2) Cold
Jordan's on this Disc Set. And there's an emotional crowd outburst that
occurs right about when you are feeling that way yourself - check-it-out
- it's great - right after J.G. asks Dave Nelson & John Dawson to
join them on stage for some songs. Also, please beware and put on your
Deadhead seat-belt during Phil Lesh's fret board attack on the Other One intro,
as it is one of the heaviest ever. Almost like hard-rock/early metal -
awesome, seriously awesome. And just leave it to Pig to say it the best
to sum up the overall delivery of this set of Grateful Dead Shows:
"I'm a Stoned Jack Baller and You Know it's True, and I Give Everything
that I've Got to You, Yes I Will". Enjoy !!!!!!!!
