Welcome to my auction for a Retrovibe Zygote Bass in Transparent Red
The Zygote bass has a solid Mahogany body and is my homage to the Carl Thompson basses played by Les Claypool. It was designed by me, here in the UK, and made in China and has 24 easily accessible frets, through-body stringing and great sustain. It also weighs just 3.5kg (7.4lbs) so it’s possible to play for hours, on your feet, without the backache you can get from heavier, bulkier basses.
I rewired it with my version of the classic Peavey T40 wiring which allows coil-tapping of those mighty MM-style humbuckers. With the tone pot wide open you get single coil with full treble present. Roll the tone knob off slightly and it smoothly changes to series humbucker mode, again with full treble present. The rest of the travel on the tone knob is standard treble roll-off. This wiring is duplicated for each of the pickups and the range of tones available is immense. Of course, this is also due in part to the position of the bridge pickup which gives access to honky treble tones for great fingerstyle lines.
I did consider fitting an active pre-amp to the Zygote but decided the tonal palette was already so huge it really doesn’t need one.
Thanks for looking,
David
