Getting technical:
The key with any audio interconnect is that it makes a solid low impedance connection between your HiFi separates which can be relied upon for many years. This requires solid connectors, thick copper conductors and shielding that wont degrade, gold plating for corrosion resistance and high quality soldering and construction techniques for long term reliability.
As long as a good low impedance connection is made, the cable will have no measurable effect on the sound because the signal voltage across the cable (and thus the capability of the cable to affect the sound) is negligible.
Cheap cables made in the far east are often compromised in the amount and quality of materials used. They start to fail over time as the cable is flexed, degrading the sound quality as their impedance rises.
Many people feel they have no choice but to spend hundreds of pounds on well made cables to avoid poor quality cables from the far east.
