Designed to carry the formidable long range AIM-54 Phoenix missile, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat was first flown on December 21st, 1970. Made famous by the Hollywood film Top Gun, the F-14 replaced the F-4 Phantom II as the US Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter. Its design includes a variable geometry wing that can sweep back for high speed supersonic intercepts and forward for improved positioning in air to air dogfights.
The VX-4 Evaluators was a U.S. Navy Air Test and Evaluation Squadron based at NAS Point Mugu. Their tail code was XF, and they flew the F-14 Tomcat and F/A-18 Hornet until their disestablishment. VX-4 flew aircraft that were currently in operational service with the US Navy, and began their life with the Chance Vought F7U Cutlass. When the AIM-9 Sidewinder came about, the F-8 Crusader was introduced to VX-4, and in the early 1960’s the F-4 Phantom II made it’s debut with VX-4. In the early 1970’s the F-14A Tomcat arrived and when the F/A-18 Hornet came to the fleet, it appeared with VX-4 as well, plus newer variants of the F-14 Tomcat.
Century Wings' 1:144 scale F-14s are constructed almost entirely of diecast metal. The series features a detailed selection of weapons, and landing gear and doors fixed in the down position for easy display. The standard release includes an articulated swing wing that can be configured in varying sweep positions, and certain special releases feature a "launch configuration" with wings fixed in the full-forward position, with leading and trailing edge flaps permanently deployed and the nose-gear compressed with launch bar extended to engage the catapult shuttle.
