Alceste

From original hand-painted tiles in the William Morris Gallery collection

Designed by Sir Edward Coley BURNE-JONES Bt (1833-1898) and painted by Lucy FAULKNER ORRINSMITH (1839-1910) for Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Company.

Alceste was designed as part of a series of 2-tile panels depicting the heroines of Geoffrey Chaucer's poem The Legend of Good Wimmen. Burne-Jones's designs date from in 1861-2  and several versions of the series were made by the Morris firm. This figure of Alceste was part of the tiled fireplace in the hall at Sandroyd, home of the artist John Roddam Spencer Stanhope (1829-1908) and the second building (after Red House) designed by Philip Webb (1831-1915). The Sandroyd tiles are the earliest known to have been painted for Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Company by Lucy Faulkner. Lucy and Kate Faulkner (the latter also a tile-painter and designer for Morris & Co.) were the sisters of Charles Faulkner, one of the founding partners of 'the Firm'.

William Morris tiles

The tiles are made by two artists in a ceramic studio in London. The images are screen printed then fired in a kiln where the glaze melts and the image becomes fixed permanent. The image will not scratch off unlike many tiles now being sold online using hot press printing techniques. It is not advisable to use hot press printing where you require the image to be permanent.

The tiles

All images are fired onto the Prismatics range (PRG1 White tile) of Johnsons Tiles- A British Company in Stoke on Trent. For tiling projects where a mixture of William Morris Tiles and Johnson’s white plain tiles are required the field tiles can be purchased online, or ordered from many tile shops. The tiles measure 150mm x150mm x 7mm and are also suitable for fireplaces.

Bespoke Fireplace tiles

All tiles are hand made by The Jackfield Tile museum made in sizes 6 inches x 6inch (152mmx152mm) giving exact size replacement for Victorian Fireplaces. The Jackfield Tile museum is the most complete tile factory in England, and a World Heritage Site. Traditional techniques are still used to create beautiful handmade tiles with a unique glaze quality. Any enquiries about this range email us at mail@williammorristiles.co.uk or 07719871419

10cm x 10cm tiles

We also offer a range of 10cmx10cm tiles also using Johnson’s prismatic white tiles. They can also be matched with plain tiles of this range again any further questions email us at mail@williammorristiles  or telephone 07719871419 and we will answer your enquiry.
