Foreword
Congratulations on your purchase of a GIpro-DS gear position indicator.
The GIpro from HealTech Electronics Ltd. is the most advanced gear position
indicator on the market today.
This product will fit all Kawasaki fuel injected (FI) motorcycles which have onboard
Diagnostic System connector. This connector is referred as KDS (Kawasaki
Diagnostic System) in the Kawasaki manuals.
Unlike other gear indicators available for your bike, this product connects to the
diagnostic connector. It makes the installation very simple. The unit reads data
directly from the ECU, offering faster and more reliable readings than competing
products.
The display is auto learning, there are no buttons and no “programming wire”.
Known limitations:
Your bike is not equipped with Gear Position Sensor, therefore determining the
gear in use is only possible when the engine is running and the clutch is
released.
Installation
Find the 4-pole male diagnostic connector (KDS) under the seat, near the ECU
box. It has a removable cap and is either semi-transparent or black in colour.
Note: You may find TWO of this connector on your bike. In this case, try both
connectors, but only one of them will supply data to the GIpro. It will not harm
your bike if you connect the GIpro to the wrong plug first.
Remove the cap, and connect the GIpro plug.
Route the cable to the mounting location.
Peel off the green plastic from the back of the unit, and mount the display.
Secure the cable with the cable ties supplied, ensuring that the steering
movement is not impaired by the cable.
Setup
This unit comes pre-programmed for Kawasaki bikes. It is fully functional after
installation. When ignition is turned on, the display counts forward (1 to 6) and it
will show the gear selected when engine is running and clutch is released.
However, if you have a SpeedoHealer, or other speedometer calibrator installed,
or the clutch switch is not working, you may find that some gears are not
indicated correctly.
For this reason, the GPDS-K04 model has two operating modes:
- Factory mode (default, no need to teach the GIpro)
- Custom mode (learning procedure must be performed)
Use the Custom mode only if some gears are not indicated correctly.
Custom mode:
- Perform the Reset procedure as described in the next chapter.
- Turn ignition On. The display counts backwards (6 to 1) indicating that the
unit is in Custom mode and it is ready to learn the gear positions.
- Raise the rear wheel off the ground by using a suitable stand, and start the
engine in Neutral.
Caution: Secure the front brake lever using a strap or cable tie to prevent
unintentional movement of the bike. Take care when performing the
following actions to prevent the bike from coming off the bike stand.
Note: during these actions, the ABS warning light may come on. This is
normal. The ABS warning light will clear during the next ride, when both
wheels are spinning.
- The display will blink “1”.
Select first gear, release the clutch, and keep the RPM above idle speed.
The display is blinking faster while the unit is learning the gear.
- When the display shows “2”, select second gear.
Repeat this process until all gears are thought (5 or 6).
In top gear, wait until “o” (over) is indicated.
The unit is programmed and should indicate the gears correctly.
Now, when ignition is turned on, the display counts forward (1 to 6) indicating
that it is fully functional.
Reset
Perform the Reset procedure if you wish to toggle between Factory mode and
Custom mode.
Cut off the power of the unit 6 times in a row, while the GIpro display is
counting up and shows 3, 4 or 5 (or counting down and shows 2, 3 or 4).
On certain bikes, you can power on/off the display by flipping the engine RUN
switch on/off.
Otherwise, you can do this by cycling the ignition key, or disconnectingreconnecting
the GIpro coupler while ignition is on.
Note: if you wish to stay in Custom mode but want to repeat the learning
procedure, you need to execute the Reset procedure twice.
Troubleshooting
You may find TWO semi-transparent connectors on the bike with a removable
cap or dummy plug. Try the second one if the unit does not work from the first
one.
Disconnect the GIpro connector and check whether the pins are broken, bent or
pushed out of position. Reconnect the plug, and make sure that all connections
are good and the connector is fully seated.
If you can not execute the Setup procedure, your battery might be old or weak.
Charge the battery or connect another battery using a jumper cable.
If some gears are not indicated properly when the engine is running and clutch is
released, reset the unit and setup again.
If the problem persists, your clutch might be slipping.
Warranty
The unit is completely sealed and epoxy encapsulated, which gives extreme
protection for the internal parts from shocks, vibrations and water.
