For sale is a very rare First State of the Library Edition of Bleak House. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1861 (but no date printed, as issued). Volume 1. This volume is from is the only complete works edition authorised by Dickens during his lifetime. 457p.p. Illustrated by Phiz.

Bound in sumptuous full contemporary polished tan calf, with raised bands to the spine, tooled in gilt, and ornate panels tooled in gilt. The titles in gilt to polished morocco title labels. To the boards are double-line panels tooled in gilt, flanked by tooling in blind. Original fine marbled endpapers. All page edges marbled.

Externally, it remains in very pleasing order throughout: the calf largely bright and the gilt also. Very occasional trivial rubbing. The hinges and gutters are very firm. Internally, aside from the odd spot/browning to a few pages, it is crisp and fresh.

This is indeed a very scarce opportunity to own a first state volume, published in the Library Edition of the Works of Dickens. Seldom seen available on the market, and beautifully bound, this volume will grace any collection.
