The History

These beautiful earrings feature classic Navajo Nation silversmith work throughout with gorgeous handmade quality that you just can't buy anymore!

Antique/Vintage Native American jewelry is very rare to find. This is due to these pieces being made for reservation and personal use before the tourist trade became popular. Very few pieces were made and even less survived to today.

Baltic amber is a specific subset of amber that is found only in northern Europe: it accounts for some 80% of the known amber in the world. Between 35 and 50 million years ago, sap oozed out from a forest of conifers in the region now covered by the Baltic Sea, and eventually hardened into clear lumps. Shoved around northern Europe by glaciers and river channels, lumps of genuine Baltic amber can still be found today on the eastern coasts of England and Holland, throughout Poland, Scandinavia and northern Germany and much of western Russia and the Baltic states.

The earrings are marked "Sterling," along with a pictorial maker's mark on which I could not find any information. If you look closely at the first photo, the Baltic Amber in the earring on the left looks pebbly. It appears that whatever material was placed into the back of the bezel setting has broken apart into pieces. This does not affect the integrity of the stone and the stone is not loose.

The Piece

The Baltic Amber in these unique earrings is oval cabochon cut and displays a stunningly  smooth, polished surface with no cracks or scratches. The Baltic Amber is an orange color with gorgeous natural inclusions seen throughout that give it a speckled look. The Baltic Amber is set into saw tooth bezel settings, a common theme found in Navajo Nation jewelry.

The earrings are crafted out of solid sterling silver and are completely handmade. The overall motif is quite floral. The design of the earrings includes 2 parts; first, the artisan would have created the base layer of silver. This is the layer that houses the Baltic Amber bezel settings. Then, the swirling, floral accents and granulated bead accents throughout the earrings would have been applied over the top layer. This technique creates a high relief, three dimensional type of design and is very cool looking.

The earrings measure 1" tall by just under 3/4" wide. The Baltic Amber has an approximate measurement of 5/16" tall by 1/4" wide. The design includes posts for pierced ears as well as plastic disc backings with a Sterling Silver base.

Antique and Vintage jewelry is disappearing at alarming rates. Unfortunately, most of the jewelry from this time period has been lost or melted down over the years, please don't miss your chance to own this special piece of history!
