1946 H. N. WHITE-KING, CLEVELAND ~ MODEL 1065 "MASTER SILVERTONE" ~ MEDIUM BORE, PROFESSIONAL Bb/A CORNET WITH A SOLID STERLING SILVER BELL IN COLLECTOR GRADE CONDITION

I have been playing horns for 60 years...collecting and restoring vintage trumpets and cornets, and building custom horns for 49.  Over the decades I amassed a vast trumpet/ cornet collection.  During the past few years I have thinned out the herd and continue to do so.  All my horns are gig ready...cleaned, valves adjusted & aligned, and with new corks & felts when necessary.

PLEASE LOOK AT THE OTHER HORNS I HAVE LISTED

For your consideration, here is a collector grade example of a 71 year old Master Silvertone cornet that is in need of a new owner.  This cornet is straight without dents, dings nor repairs of any nature whatsoever, and appears to have seen VERY little, if any play time in its history...pretty much a collector's display horn.  The valves are bright and shiny and show virtually no wear.  The original King gold tinted lacquer is still intact with only a few tiny spots of "blush" present.  The original owner stripped the lacquer from the sterling silver bell (I would assume to improve resonance and possibly to make cleaning the silver easier as the horn aged...King lacquered their silver bells to keep them looking shiny for as long as possible).  However, when the lacquer starts to deteriorate, the silver underneath tarnishes...if silver polish is used to brighten the darker exposed silver, the abrasiveness of the polish dulls the lacquer...so the preferred remedy is to remove the lacquer and keep the raw silver polished.

From the H. N. White website:

From The H. N. White's Company's earliest days (1905-1910), they made the finest cornets on the market and led the way in innovation and quality. Early cornets will have a "lion head" by the serial numbers. Most models were designed by H. N. White, including the Master model cornet which set the industry standard. The Master model cornet is also known as the "under slung" cornet because of it's unusual entry point into the valves. In 1918 the company was incorporated and "Co" was added to the engraving of all instruments, before 1918 the engraving read simply as "H. N. White." The list of H. N. White cornet players is impressive including: Red Allen, Herbert Clark, "Wild" Bill Davison, Dr. Frank Simon, and the great Del Staigers.  In 1926-1928 H. N. White introduced Sterling Silver bells to his cornets, which produces better tone, being clearer, richer, with a more pleasing quality. Not to mention some of the best looking bells ever produced in the music industry. Even today H. N. White "King" cornets are still played in bands all over the country. The H. N. White Company made all of its own cornets and did not stencil any for other companies (that I know of).

This Master Silvertone is a medium weight 2 lb. - 5.6 oz. cornet that will accommodate virtually any music style and acoustic venue in both Bb and A pitch...to achieve "A" pitch, the tuning slide is pulled all the way out, and the three valve slides are pulled out to the rings engraved on their slide tubes.  The cornet has a clear and resonant tone that is easily controlled thanks to its solid sterling silver bell...its sound is bold, dark (to the point of being Teutonic with the included Schilke mouthpiece), rather round, centered and focused.  It is a free and open blowing horn with a rich, warm and dark tone that produces a sophisticated edge when pushed (but will never "crack" because of the silver bell), and loves to be piloted in the stratosphere.  This horn has great intonation...the low register is not flat, and is very resonant.  The 5th harmonic is great, and so is the upper register intonation.  Slots are superb.  Responsive and flexible, the Master Silvertone makes a great symphony/ orchestral cornet as it doesn't overpower the other section horns, but with the right mouthpiece can become a wailing jazz axe or can be backed off for small combo use or soft ballads.

Mechanically, this cornet is in like new condition with lightning fast valves that are bright and shiny, without staining nor pitting, and have excellent compression.  All slides operate with silky smoothness including the tuning slide micro adjusting collar.  Cosmetically, the cornet is in as pristine condition as a 70 year old instrument can be...except for a few pin point pings, a tiny ripple on the bell flare at the applied diamond shaped rim joint/ seam (a tiny nick near the seam suggests the rim may have contacted a hard surface in the past which caused the tiny ripple), and the tiny areas of lacquer blush on the mouthpiece receiver, the rest of the cornet is in flawless condition both inside and out.  I tend to be overly critical and as accurate as possible when describing my horns, so that no one receives any "surprises".  So, bid with confidence as I think you'll find my feedback speaks for itself.
