DESCRIPTION: I imagine some fortunate little girl loved and played with this precious doll very carefully because of her originality and excellent condition. HEAD: Beginning with such fine forms that only well-known sculptors achieved, the Bru firm, circa 1887, truly achieved the high merits of their coveted French bebes with this charmer! Her face is smooth and creamy, as if lightly dusted with a down powder puff to a light rose tone. Her gently applied facial features come alive! There is not a flaw or slip of the brush in her fine lashes and the smooth curves of her lips are accented with the finest touches of the artist’s brush! So lovely! On the back of her head, you will find a light pink line what is referred to as a "straw mark"...known as a line where paint gathered while still wet and laid on a bed of straw before firing. It is not a hairline or damage and is not uncommon with Bru dolls. Beautiful, blue, lifelike, paperweight eyes in their original set seem earnestly dreaming of home. Her head poses nicely… swiveling and nodding smoothly with the original metal Bru head connector. You will enjoy discovering the different moods she can portray with just the tilt of her chin! Her original cork pate is topped with the golden hand tied mohair wig which has always been her very own. It is still full and frames her feminine face nicely. You will find the correct incised markings on the back of her head, Bru Jne 5, with the same #5 on shoulder plate and even hidden at the ends of her bisque elbows.  

BODY: It is a thrill to find a Bru with her original, labeled, Chevrot-period body so very clean and showing little wear! It is this type of body that collectors desire most on a Bru Jne. Comparing this doll with others listed online and here on eBay, you will notice that this one is without question, the best value! Her gracefully sculpted lower bisque arms are original and without damage but have some of the typical characteristics such as raised mold lines, a pour line at the left inner elbow, and a dark speck in the bisque. These are not distracting but I mention them as full disclosure. She can hold a pose with her arms raised or as you choose. The carved lower wooden legs are in good, sturdy condition but show typical minor but stable surface crazing and chipping of the paint. 

CLOTHING: How rare it is to find a Bru in original Bru attire! I believe you will look a long time to find a Bru in original Bru clothing and hers is so becoming! Donning her original pantaloons, fancy chemise and half-slip of matching fabric and lace, she primps and giggles as she twirls in front of the looking glass. Next, she slips on the original, but now lightly faded, salmon-pink silk satin Bru dress, with moss colored silk velvet cuffs, collar and lapels and finally her matching hat. Ahh! She’s ready, except for her vintage hand-knit socks and original shoes. She checked to make sure they were her favorites, marked “Bru Jne Paris” on the soles and also size 5. (There is a little wear to a 2” long place on the front hem of her dress, but still, how amazing, being 130 years old!) Silk ribbons are 1960's replacements as may be the ostrich feather in her hat.
