Volume 2 (of two) only of William Gibson's Institutes and Practice of Surgery, Philadelphia, Carey, Lea & Blanchard 1835 (fourth edition).

A poor and very FLAWED copy, mainly of interest for the fascinating inscription. The first part records that the book was taken at Hanover Courthouse in July 63 by Maurice A. Sullivan, 17th Regiment NY Volunteers. This regiment participated in the battle of Hanover Court House in May 1862. The regiment mustered out of service in June 1863, and the three-year enlistees were transferred to the 146th regiment, where they passed back through Hanover Court House in July on their way to Gettysburg. The second part of the inscription records the book's presentation in 1867 to John B. Ralph of the Marine Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Ralph, who went on to be City Physician of Omaha, Nebraska, was then working there as a medical student. Presumably Sullivan was seriously wounded and under Ralph's care.

MISSING several early pages including title page, and parts of a couple of others, substantial dampstain, foxing, wear, chipping, other owner markings, bookplate, etc. A relic.
