This Nikon 35-135mm FX-format midrange zoom lens appears to have received modest use, evidenced by the condition of its mount, and has clearly been well cared-for when not in use. It remains near-new in appearance, and its zoom and focus grips, for example, still have the sharp-edged texture common to brand-new examples. The lens has beautiful glass and clean, clear optics throughout; and operationally it is excellent: focus action is light and smooth; zoom action still nicely damped. AF is nice and smooth and proved consistently accurate in my testing. Most important the lens is impressively sharp, producing excellent results, in my testing, throughout its range. Nikon's 35-135mm AF midrange zoom is a sharp, contrasty and exceedingly versatile full-frame zoom lens. It has a useful zoom range from a wide-angle (on FX; normal on DX*) 35mm setting through a moderate 135mm telephoto setting, and includes a very effective macro mode which for many photographers will preclude the need for a dedicated macro lens. With a variable aperture of f/3.5-4.5, it is a full stop faster than most newer midrange zooms, which has significant benefits for subject isolation and for low-light use. Build quality is excellent, with primarily-metal construction and a satisfying heft absent on newer lenses. It is a far better lens than many third-party zooms and is fully equivalent in terms of image quality to much newer Nikon lenses that sell for many times its price, making it a legitimate bargain on the used market. The difficulty is in finding a good example, as most of those available on the used market have been heavily used, with many showing signs of neglect and even abuse.
