Tow Mater

Just like in the movies "Cars" and "Cars 2" - here is Tow Mater, commonly known just as "Mater"!!!

One of the most recognized movie vehicles of today - every kid knows and loves "Mater".  If you want a vehicle that will get you more attention than any Italian sports car ever could - this is it.  Just park Mater next to anything at a car show and all the other cars get ignored - seriously!!! It's a big attention getter - especially with the kids.  This replica was built in May-June 2012 just before the release of Cars 2.  I took it to car shows all last summer and it was the biggest hit and draw everywhere it went.  You can't even stop for gas without drawing a crowd!!

This replica was built by Scotlea Hot Rods from a 1955 Chevy 2-ton Dump truck.  See scotlea.com for pics of the build.

Every effort was made to build this replica as close to the actual "Mater" as possible.  The tow bed is very accurate and made from steel.  All the lights work, including the rotating beacon light on top. Note the detailed "carburetor county" license plate.  The winch and tow mechanism are just for show - they do not work.  All the front "face" pieces are steel - including the teeth.  This was all hand built and formed sheetmetal.  The windshield is covered in perforated vinyl that you can see out of, but you can't see in.  The eyes are decals.  Likewise the side and rear windows have been covered in perforated vinyl so it looks like Mater is driving himself.

Yes, it does run and drive.  The engine is the original 235 6-cylinder, with a 4-speed manual transmission.  The engine was converted to an electronic distributor and alternator.  The original 2-speed rearend is locked into its low gear.  Top speed is about 45 mph (remember that this was a dump truck meant to haul heavy loads, not go fast).

The paint is all hand done.  Best part about maintenance is that you don't have to keep this truck inside - the more rust the more accurate it is.  The paint appears to be rusted metal, but it's actually paint.  No body work was done since Mater is supposed to be old, dented and rusty looking - however the body is really solid.  The interior is very minimal with only a bench seat and a set of aftermarket gauges to monitor engine vitals.  No heat or AC.  The original hood is included, but not attached with hinges.  I set it on the truck during the winter just to keep the snow out.

NOTE: it is not legal to drive this vehicle on the road due to the windshield being covered with vinyl.

It can be driven in parades, taken to car shows by trailer, or just parked for display.

This is a replica - not the actual "Tow Mater" from the movie - that was a cartoon.  This replica is not licensed by Disney.  It is a privately owned and custom built replica made for personal enjoyment.
