******************************

Peter Basch (1921-2004) was a German/American glamour photographer who over his career developed a style of deeply innovative artistic glamour, pin up, and erotic photography. The artist was born in Germany, the son of Austrian parents famous in the German film industry. His family moved to Los Angeles in the 1930s where worked as the assistant of Laszlo Willinger. In 1945 Basch moved to New York and built a successful career as a magazine photographer even as he kept a foot in the film industry working with directors from Elia Kazan to Jean Luc Goddard. He produced photographs of many celebrities, artists, performers, dancers, actors and glamour-girls in America and Europe. His work could be found everywhere from Life to Playboy and he was a mainstay in the figure and men's magazines and pin up calendars of the era. He photographed many of the most prominent stars of the 50s and 60s. The photographer was innovative in the moving Hollywood portraiture from the highly formal glamour views popular in the 1930s and 1940s to a more expressive style, in which stars such as Anita Ekberg, Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot, Jane Fonda, Grace Kelly, and Catherine Deneuve were photographed in a more natural and personal manner. His work has been exhibited internationally, and a series of books were published showcasing his risque, nude, erotic and figure photography. The most colorfully titled of these, and a phrase which perfectly sums up the artist's illustrious career is "Put A Girl In Your Pocket: The Artful Camera of Peter Basch."
