SALVADOR YSART MILLEFIORI PAPERWEIGHT INKWELL WITH LATER BRASS FITTINGS

This beautiful inkwell is believed to be an early work of paperweight artist Salvador Ysart. The inkwell's stopper features seven complex millefiori canes in cranberry and white and complex millefiori centers over a mottled ground.  The same style canes in the stopper are also used in the exterior row of the base and a nice larger version of the cane adorns the base.  There are two other concentric rows in the base between the larger central cane and the exterior row.  One of these rows consist of very complex canes, each with 15-20 rods in various shades of pink.  Some of these rods appear to be tiny hollow cog canes.  The interior concentric circle consists of multicolored complex millefiori canes appearing as a circle of small colorful canes set in a dazzling display of craftsmanship. The arrangement in the base is set over the same mottled ground as the stopper.

The actual inkwell is a shallow portion of the upper base that is enhanced by an orange torsade over the same mottled ground.  The stopper and base are connected by later working brass fixtures that extend like a collar over the inkwell portion of the base.  It is most likely that these later fittings were added to compensate some minor damage to either the rim of the inkwell base or to the stopper. Rough pontil. The piece measures 3-5/8” (9.3 cm) in diameter and 3-3/8” (8.6 cm) in height.
