Attention 3 Rail Tube Track Users... please have a look at photo #3 in this listing. Take a few minutes and check your rails in several areas of around your layout to make sure all 3 rails are level with each other. If one rail is higher or lower than any of the other 2 rails this cleaning pad will not work for you. The pad will simply ride the highest rail(s) and that is not going to do you any good. Again... PLEASE make sure all 3 rails are level. The pad is designed to float on your rails and adjust to any elevation changes but it cannot bend to fit non-level rails.

Installation information...
The cleaning pad comes 90% assembled, only the egg weights need to be added. A 1/8" metal drilling bit and a power drill are REQUIRED for installation, a metal file and micro screw driver may also come in handy but are not required. Complete instructions are provided in the second picture of this listing and also included with your purchase. Pad measurements are approximately... 70mm (long) x 40mm (wide) x 8mm (thick). Please check the clearances on the unit you are planning on installing this cleaning pad on to make sure there is enough room between the trucks inner most wheels and under the car when placed on the track.

What is this cleaning pad made of?..
The pad is made of a wood product called Masonite, cut and formed to fit a variety of rolling stock. The pad blanks are made using a template so every blank is the same as the one before it. Each S Scale pad requires 2 blanks to make one complete pad. We drill out the nail holes and countersink 2 nails into one pad then glue and clamp the other piece into place. After the two pieces are dry we cut the angles and then sand the edges smooth by hand. Really... every single pads final shaping is done one at a time by hand! The pad is held onto the car by the two nails and two weights. The pad is weighted to keep it in solid contact with your rails at all times yet it is free floating so it can move up and down to match your tracks profile. The hand formed beveled edges prevent the pad from snagging on track joints, switches and crossings. The sides and top of the pad are painted black to help hide it under the car, basically simulating a shadow under the car.

How does the pad work?..
Masonite is a very soft fibrous wood that is super absorbent. It is impossible for this soft wood product to scratch your metal rails and if used dry as recommended it will also never corrode your rails from chemical cleaners. The fact is... wood cannot scratch metal under any circumstance so don't believe those who claim a Masonite pad is abrasive. What the pad does is quite simple. It slowly and gently removes layer after layer of oxidation by absorbing it off your rails and into the pad. With each pass it picks up more and more. You will notice an improvement in your locomotive performance after just a few laps around your layout. The more you use it the better it works. Does this pad provide an instant clean?.. NO. Will it ever make your rails pass the "white glove test" as some cleaners claim they do?.. NO.  It was never designed to do either of those things. What it will do with regular use is provide you with a constant level of clean that will keep your locomotives running at their best with minimum effort from you. Our hope is that you will find the perfect car to install this DIY pad on so it will match your style of railroading and then run the car constantly on your layout, only removing the car long enough to clean the pad from time to time.

How long will a cleaning pad last?..
The pad will last MUCH longer than any other cleaning pad on the market regardless of price, it has the potential to last for YEARS if you take care of it correctly. Not even the big boys of track cleaning cars can out last this pad, nor can they even come close to the price or great results. That includes the super expensive brands that require constant changing of the cleaning cloth, spinning disks and/or felt pads. We have been using the same pads on our display track cars and home layout for years, thousands of scale miles and not a single pad is even close to needing replaced!

How do I "clean" the cleaning pad?..
This is very simple, all you need is a stiff bristle toothbrush and some rubbing alcohol. Simply dip the the brush into the alcohol and start to scrub the accumulation of black goo (oxidation) off the cleaning pad. The more you scrub the pad the more it will come clean. Don't forget to rinse the toothbrush in some warm water when finished. Please keep in mind that no matter how much you scrub the pad you will never get it to look new again so don't go crazy about it. Just focus on getting the darkest build-up of oxidation off the pad so you can get your cleaning car back on the track. Once the pad is dry you are ready to start cleaning again.

How do I know when I need to remove or replace the pad?..
The pad will last a very long time, however it will eventually wear out and need to be removed. To put it simply, when you have worn the pad down to the second layer of wood it is time to replace the pad. One of the great features of this cleaning pad is that it requires no alterations to your car other than 2 small holes through the base. You can remove the pad and add the car back into your regular fleet or train cars and never notice that at one time it had a cleaning pad attached to it or replace the pad in a few minutes. To remove the pad, take the car shell off the base, loosen the screw eyes that are holding the weights against the nails and slide the pad out from the bottom of the base.
