Tyne & Wear PTE Buses Set A; TEN 6 x 4 ins Colour Prints

The Tyne & Wear Passenger Transport Executive came into being on 1 April 1974, as a successor to the short-lived Tyneside PTE, which took over the Newcastle, South Shields and Sunderland municipal fleets between 1970 and 1973. Tyne & Wear PTE Buses Set A looks at the birth of the PTE and depicts vehicles from the three fleets, although concentrating on South Shields and Sunderland.  It opens with a glorious shot of TPTE 595, a South Shields 1964 Daimler CCG6 in yellow Tyneside livery passing a former Newcastle Leyland Panther single-decker TPTE 801 in South Shields on 5 May 1973.  Yellow and cream liveried T&WPTE 965, a former Sunderland AEC Swift 3MP2R with Marshall B47D body is at Newcastle Central Station on 17/4/76. A former Sunderland Daimler Fleetline CRG6LX, TPTE No 276, is in Sunderland on 5 May 1973. Sunderland No 229, caught at Seaburn on 5 May 1973, is a 1958 Daimler CVG5 with Roe H35/28R body and still in green and ivory Corporation colours. Sunderland No 225, another CVG5 of 1958 is in the town centre, whilst No 257, a Daimler Fleetline CVG6LX  is in corporation colours with the traditional ‘Shop at Binns’ advert. Sunderland 104 (JBR104F) was a Bristol RELL6G of 1968 with stylish B47D body dating from the standee craze of that era. Just two examples survived in the PTE fleet a decade later. Sunderland Daimler Fleetline CRG6LX No 255 is on the promenade 18 route at Seaburn on 5 May 1973. Newcastle was the dominant partner in the new PTE, and the PTE livery of yellow and cream was inherited from Newcastle, so we have included a pleasant 1972 study of Leyland Titan No 123 (LWK123) in Newcastle Transport colours. To conclude the sequence, we look at TPTE 344, later T&W No 1974, a former South Shields Bristol RESL6L with ECW B45D body in South Shields on 5 May 1973.  These views are copyright. Tyne & Wear PTE Buses Set B; TEN 6 x 4 ins Colour Prints

The Tyne & Wear Passenger Transport Executive came into being on 1 April 1974, as a successor to the short-lived Tyneside PTE, which took over the Newcastle, South Shields and Sunderland municipal fleets between 1970 and 1973. Tyne & Wear PTE Buses Set B looks at the birth of the PTE and recalls some of the extraordinary mix of hired or purchased second hand buses that the PTE acquired to provide a much augmented connecting service between the three main towns. It opens with T&WPTE No 413, 952JUB, which had been Leeds No 952, an AEC Regent V of 1964. It is seen at Central Station on 26 August 1976 in Leeds green, with a yellow bonnet and side patch for the PTE insignia.  LCU123, T&WPTE No 586, is a former South Shields Daimler CCG6 of 1964, and is in yellow PTE livery at S Shields with red hubcaps.  No 748, LBB748P, at Central Station on 24 August 1976, is a brand new Scania Metropolitan BR111DH with MC H45/29D body and blue hubcaps.  An interior shot of Byker garage on 16 May 1976 features an amazing range of stock, including Leicester 25, a Leyland Titan PD3A with St Helens front and Edinburgh No 619 a 1962 Leyland Titan PD2A/30 with ‘BMMO’ style tinfront. Bournemouth No 204, an Atlantean PDR1/1 of 1966 was also hired by the PTE during 1976. Our next view, which is a line up at Byker depot on 16 May 1976 includes Leicester, Southend,  Edinburgh, Bournemouth, Leeds and PTE stock, the nearest vehicle being No 415, which was Leeds 284, 5284NW, a Leyland Titan PD3/45. Next to 4I5 is a Regent V and a Volvo Ailsa. TPTE No 326, ACU26C, is a former South Shields Daimler Fleetline CRG6LX seen in yellow and cream in S Shields on 5 May 1973. TPTE  821, KBB521L, also in S Shields, is a Leyland National 1151/2R/0203 with dual door 44 seat bus body, whilst TWPTE No 241 is a 1976 Leyland Atlantean AN68A/1R with Alexander bodywork seen in Newcastle on 16 May 1976. Our final view is of  TWPTE No 37 at Byker. This immense vehicle is a Standerwick Bristol VRLL H6L of 1972 with ECW CH42/18C bodywork, and came second-hand ex National Travel, and was bought for the Tyne Commission Quay services. Tyne & Wear PTE Buses Set C; TEN 6 x 4 ins Colour Prints

The Tyne & Wear Passenger Transport Executive came into being on 1 April 1974, as a successor to the short-lived Tyneside PTE, which took over the Newcastle, South Shields and Sunderland municipal fleets between 1970 and 1973. Tyne & Wear PTE Buses Set C explores the early days of the PTE with special attention to the bewildering mix of second hand or hired vehicles used to bridge an initial vehicle shortage. We open with AEC Regent V2D2RA No 410, 944GUA, which had been Leeds Corporation No 944, and is in Leeds Green with a yellow patch bearing the TWPTE logo. It is crossing the legendary Tyne Bridge on 26-08-76. No 414, 958JUB, is a sister vehicle, and was former Leeds No 958, and is at Denton on 16 May 1976. No 414 appears in another view at Denton, but the star of this view is Bournemouth Corporation No 204, HEL204D, a Leyland Atlantean PDR1/1 of 1966 with Metro Cammell H41/31F body. Edinburgh also loaned buses to the PTE,  and Edinburgh No 633, YWS633 is a Leyland Titan PD2A/30 with BMMO style tinfront and Alexander H37/29R body of 1962. PTE buses, other Edinburgh stock and even a bus from Southend appear in this view at Byker depot on 16 May 1976.  The Southend connection appears in our next scene, with Southend No 385, GHJ385L, on the No 1 route to Denton on 17 May 1976. This Daimler Fleetline CRL6-33 carries a Northern Counties H49/31D body. TWPTE No 402, GCN2N, was one of a trio of 1975 Volvo-Ailsas with Alexander H44/35 bodywork and is parked next to a Southend Fleetline. It later became No 412.  TWPTE No 27, KNL527L, is a rare Leyland Panther PSUR1B/1R of 1972 with Alexander DP45F body, and is at Beamish shortly after delivery.  Few Panthers were built and construction soon ended. TWPTE No 33, OCK63K, is outside the classical Newcastle Central station on 26-08-76. This incredible vehicle was a former Standerwick Bristol VRLLH6L with ECW CH42/18C bodywork, built for long distance luxury coach duties, and acquired by the PTE for the rail replacement service to Tyne Commission Quay. TWPTE No 734, LBB734P, is a Scania Metropolitan BR111DH with MCW H45/29D body, and has the characteristic two level windscreen. Finally we see TWPTE No A2, 224BB, a powerful Leyland Recover lorry with a Holmes 600 recovery crane. A copy of these notes accompanies the set. These views are copyright.
