This lens will allow a projectionist to adjust wide screen images to fit the horizontal width of a motion picture screen or adjust films with a variable anamorphic squeeze. 

This lens was developed in the 1950's to accommodate various releases with different squeeze ratios necessary to fill theater screens properly.  It was most helpful with RKO Radio Pictures' SuperScope.
