Antique Chinese Zǐshā 紫砂 Purple Sands 乾隆通宝 Qianlong Tong Bao Yixing Teapot

Here we have a lovely antique Chinese  Zǐshā 紫砂 or purple sands teapot dating I believe from the late 19th century or early 20th century in or around Yixing  in the Jiangsu province in China.

This very attractive small squat cylindrical shaped decorated with three applied Chinese square centred coins to each side, they are each marked 乾隆通宝 (Qianlong Tong Bao).

Qianlong was the Chinese emperor who reigned from 1735 until 1796, Tong Bao meaning circulating treasure or coins.

The teapot has a small toad finial with the vent hole to one side.  The toad is probably a representation of Jin Chan 金蟾 or Zhaocai Chan Chu 招财蟾蜍 the wealth beckoning toad a symbol or charm for prosperity in Chinese culture.

The top of the lid has a textured surface with the same four Chinese Radicals or characters  乾隆通宝 (Qianlong Tong Bao)

The base has an impressed four character seal mark. I have attemped to work some of it out, I think the last two characters are 显戋鳳 Xiǎn Jiān feng. (Phoenix)

The teapot is a round short cylindrical shape it is approximately 2 3/4 inches high and the body diameter of 3 1/2 inches and length of 5 1/2 inches.  It weighs 202 grammes unpacked.

The teapot is in good antique condition with a small chip to the handle  - see above for full details.

This is a great item for any collector of antique Chinese pottery,
Zǐshā, teapots or Yixing ware.
