A well provenanced, beautiful Classical Greek coin. An ancient silver stater, from the Athenian colony of Thurium, (Thourioi) South Italy, circa 443 - 400 BC.

The obverse with a fine style depiction of the patron goddess of Athens, Athena. She is shown wearing a close fitting Attic helmet, decorated with a laurel wreath and horsehair crest.

The reverse with a powerful bull, its head lowered, a tuna fish below. The legend reading:

QOURIWN

"Of the Thurians"

Gamma below.

Thurium was established by Athenians in 445 BC, near the ruins of Sybaris. For their coinage, the colonists chose an iconic set of designs. The reverse incorporates the old Sybarite emblem, the bull. This fierce image is contrasted with the Classical elegance of the obverse portrait of Athena, reminiscent of the works of art produced at Athens, now at its Golden Age.

A particularly attractive, beautifully toned coin.

Weight: 7.90 g

Diameter: 20.75 mm

Provenance:

Ex. Glendining & Co. October 9, 1989, lot 606.
