It can be difficult to wrap your head around what you get in this radio for what you pay. This radio, thanks to the built in programmer and OpenTX, has features that rival and/or surpass other radios costing hundreds more. This radio is, in many ways, like the Taranis. It doesn't have sound or telemetry but both can be added.

What does the programmer board get you?

The built in programmer upgrade allows you to talk to the radio via USB and upgrade firmware as well as model settings. You can see the USB interface on the first picture in the battery bay of this transmitter. You will NOT find this on a factory radio. Without the upgrade you would be stuck with the factory firmware and the only way to change model settings would be via the radio interface. The factory firmware works but is pretty limited compared to OpenTX or ER9X. Either can easily be loaded via the programmer. It's possible to upgrade firmware without the built in programmer but to do so requires wires be soldered to the radio's motherboard. OpenTX's "Companion" allows you to use your computer's screen and keyboard to change model settings and then using the simulator test them then upload to radio.

Basically it's a convenience and feature upgrade that allows for future upgrades. If you're happy with the limited factory capabilities and radio only settings interface then you won't need it. If you want newer/better features with future upgradability and a computer interface to change model settings you do need it.

The programmer board is a solderless design so it can be taken out if desired. It's not trivial though because you still have to disassemble the radio.
