THIS FANTASTIC! ANTIQUE WESTINGHOUSE WOOD-ENCASED VOLTMETER WAS AMONG MY LATE FRIEND'S CIVIL WAR, SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING COLLECTION WHICH HE ACQUIRED 50 YEARS AGO AS PARTIAL PAYMENT FOR A WIRING RESTORATION JOB HE PERFORMED IN AN OLD BUILDING IN DOWNTOWN CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.  THE DONOR INFORMED MY FRIEND THAT IT, AND MANY OTHER ITEMS OF A SCIENTIFIC NATURE, WERE LEFT BEHIND FROM THE CIVIL WAR AND LATER DISCOVERED IN THE ATTIC SPACE OF THE OLD BUILDING.

I am no authority and have been unable to find even a reasonable facsimile of this very old voltmeter so I am only guessing it is Civil War era owing to its proximity to the former owner's other items---to include a SHOCK TREATMENT MACHINE (which I also have in my possession and is for sale (706-896-0503).

IT bears the following finely detailed graphics on a age-yellowed paper insert which can be seen through a glass top:
VOLTMETER, DIRECT READING, NO. 394~MANUFACTURED BY THE WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CO.~PITTSBURGH, PA., U.S.A. WATERHOUSE PATENT.
Also visible is an arced scale with an outside set of hand-written numbers ranging from 20 to 70 and an inside set of numbers ranging from 80 to 150.  The paper is accented on all four corners with a fleur de lis and is attached to a wood backing that is mounted into the box with four screws.

I removed the bottom plate and photo #3 reveals its interior parts--an authority on the subject will understand their significance.  The numbers 79.8 or 99.8  are stamped on a brass plate.  It appears that two sides of the box once had plates which contained holes matching those remaining holes seen in photo 6.  The top of the box is also removable by undoing one screw making it possible to remove the glass top (photo 11).

SIZE: L 5"  W 5"  H 4 3/4"  WEIGHT: 3 1/2 POUNDS

CONDITION:  Stained dark wood shows age wear, dings and scratches, and a diagonal crack extending down one edge (photo 5 far edge, lower right hand corner) of the wood, otherwise, the box is tight and sound and the wood finish has a wonderful patina.  The glass top, probably original, has a chip on one corner which can only be seen when it is removed from the case (photo 11).  The bottom is etched with the number 394 which matches it to the voltmeter's number so it is original to the box... as I believe are all its parts. The needle/gauge attached to the brass mount swings freely.

PLEASE study the photos as they speak to the age, condition and true historical value of this fine old piece.  It is being sold AS IS with no guarantees or warranties, so email any questions or requests for additional photos.
