Antique Victorian Silver Handled Shoe Horn Hallmarked Birmingham 1888 - 89 maker A & L

Here we have a lovely antique silver handled shoe horn dating from the late Victorian period. It has a ribbed spiral twist silver handle and a dished steel blade. The blade is stamped with the word STEEL.

It is fully hallmarked on the handle with the lion passant for sterling silver, the Birmingham assay office anchor mark and the year letter of a gothic  "o" for 1888-89. The maker's monogram is A & L for Adie and Lovekin.

This company, Adie and Lovekin, began its business in Snape Street, Hockley, Birmingham before 1872.

It weighs 77g unpacked and is in good condition for its age. It has a small dent on the end of the handle. The steel blade has some pitting. Still great for helping you into those tight shoes or boots!

It is 9 inches log overall , the steel blade is 4 7/8 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide.

This is a very nice item for display and use and great for adding to a collection.
