Satsuma Geisha Planter
This is a large Japanese satsuma planter. Satsuma is a style of Japanese earthenware originally from the Satsuma region of what is today southern Kyūshū. There are two types: made in Satsuma from around 1600, it featured the original plain dark clay; the second is an elaborately decorated export which began to be produced in the nineteenth century in various Japanese cities with designed adapted to appeal to the taste of western customers.
This planter features an overall floral pattern. On opposite sides, the pot has a scene with Japanese women and children in the foreground, possibly Geishas or babysitters with people working in boats in the background.
The inside features koi fish with some reeds or other flowers.
Size: 12 1/4" dia x 10" T
The planter is in good condition. It has paint wear, mostly around the top rim, and crazing. It doesn't have any chips or cracks.
