Vintage Cousances 'La Doufeu' casserole cocotte

In attractive cherry red colour and marked '26 Cousances Made in France' on the base. Also marked 'Int Patent' inside the lid.

Approx. dimensions 26cm dia x 11.5cm deep / 8 pint capacity / 6.5kg weight

A great size to feed a family. In good used condition, the inside is a bit discoloured through normal use. There are signs of use on the outside with some chipping to the enamel on the lid as shown in the photos.

The Doufeu's ingenious design allows you to put ice cubes in the channel on the lid. The ice melts during cooking allowing droplets to form on the underside of the lid. These fall onto the meat etc that you're cooking i.e. it self-bastes the meat, producing succulent results without you having to intervene! Or it works perfectly well as a 'normal' casserole dish. 

Cousances was a French cookware manufacturer, known for enameled cast iron pans. The company was formed in 1553 and was acquired by Le Creuset in 1957
