~OVERALL APPEARANCE ~ 

This is a natural, whole, larger size gem of a 'Herkimer Diamond'.  
I would grade it 'B' only because of it's intriguing natural internal fractures/growth, and external base having natural keyhole and 2 small enhydro 'blowouts'.  
This crystal is a beautiful crystal clear smoky color !
It has a distinct internal plane, about 2/3 up from the bottom, causing an interesting internal landscape with a crystal clear sky !  From other angles it creates a 'phantom' affect, and internal triangles! 
It also has some gorgeous little rainbows :)

~ On HERKIMER DIAMONDS ~
(my personal understanding)

'Herkimer Diamonds' are a rare type of quartz crystal composition and formation, found only in the Mohawk Valley of the United States of America, in, and in close proximity to, Herkimer County - State of New York.  They are estimated to be 300 - 600 MILLION years old. Their origin is unknown, although there are varying amazing speculations.  They are found in sedimentary rock which is theorized to be an ancient sea bed through which glaciers did cross.  They are often found in anthraxolite (black carbon-like material) filled pockets in hard dolomitic limestone. 

They are faceted by nature and are usually double terminated (meaning they have formed a point at each end).  The quartz itself possesses unique qualities including enhanced radiance and glow.  The finest are made of the clearest quartz to be found on earth. They are also harder than typical quartz coming in at 7.5 on the Moh's Scale, where typical quartz is a 7.  Natural inclusions and/or internal 'flaws' create wondrous manifestations, and are known to create some of the most beautiful rainbows.
