Maxwell BCAP3000P 3000 Farad 2.7V Ultracapacitor NEW
You are bidding on one or more Maxwell BCAP3000P BOOSTCAP 3000 farad 2.7V ultracapacitors.
They are brand new, unused, factory fresh. The last photo shows a randomly selected sheet with the acceptance test data for a box of 15 units.
These are the next generation of energy storage, and will eventually replace batteries in many applications. They are very similar to normal capacitors, except they have enormously more energy storage capacity. They have the following advantages over batteries:
- Can be charged and discharged far more rapidly than batteries (almost instantaneously in most applications)
- Not affected by temperature extremes
- Virtually unlimited life (over one million charge/discharge cycles)
- No complex charge controller necessary, just be sure the voltage never exceeds the unit's rated voltage of 2.7V
- Contain no acid or corrosive chemicals
Basic specs:
- Capacitance 3000 farads
- DC Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) 0.29 milliohm
- AC Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) 0.24 milliohm
- Leakage Current 5.2 mA
- Operating Temperature Range -40°C to +65°C
- Stored energy 10944 joules (3.04 WH)
- Max Power 3020 Watts
- Connections M12 x 1.75 threaded stud
- Weight .89 lb (405 grams)
- Diameter 2.4 inches (61 mm)
- Height (including studs) 6.53 inches (130 mm)
- Stud diameter .55 inches (14mm)
- Stud height .120 inches (3 mm)

One important application for these devices is for electric vehicle regenerative braking. Due to their ability to quickly charge and discharge, they can recover 80% or more of the car's energy that would otherwise be lost in heat. Batteries generally can recover less than 30% of this energy due to their limited charge acceptance.
Another application is the storage of solar energy. Many solar applications (garden lights, for instance) quickly fail due to the poor life expectancy of the battery in repeated charge/discharge cycles, poor charge control, and temperature cycling. Ultracapacitors are largely immune to these problems. These ultracapacitors can be combined in series for more voltage or parallel for more current. They ought to be good for solar related projects such as remote sensor power, solar lighting, solar electric gates, etc. A string of 6 of these 3000Farad ucaps in series would have a max voltage of 16.2V and stored energy of 65664 joules or 18.2 watt hours. As an example, 26000 joules would operate a 1/4 HP electric gate motor 35 times, assuming a 5 second cycle time. A 10 watt solar panel would take about 2 hours to fully recharge the capacitor bank.

They are also beginning to be used in space satellite applications due to their robust design and superior life expectancy over batteries. And now they are in the new Pugeot cars for stop/start systems, as well as BMWs. See

Sold with a 10 day no DOA warranty. Two M12 x 1.75 nuts are included with each ultracapacitor. Depending on your application, you may need a lockwasher. A standard 12 mm or 1/2 inch lockwasher should work fine. Internal or external toothed washers seem to make a lower resistance connection than split ring types.
