~ American Civil War Period Confederate States Marine Corp Navy Belt Buckle 1861-65 ~
The Confederate States Marine Corps (CSMC) was a branch of the Confederate States Navy. The CSMC was active March 16, 1861 – April 9, 1865, through out the period of the American Civil War.
This is a rare piece as there were only around 900-1200 Marines in the Confederate Navy.
The casting definition is very crisp, it is not a sand cast copy. Also note that there is no infill on the main buckle where the oak leaf wreath meets the affixed clasp, a common fault with copies is the presence of this infill.
To the front of the buckle is a wreath with the words ‘The Confederate States Marine Corps’ along with 11 stars (one for each of the southern states) and a capital ‘M’.
The buckles clasp is stamped ‘S. Campbell & Co, 71 Jeremy St, London’ to the front and 'Greenwood and Grey’ to the reverse.
Samuel Isaac founded the commission house of S. Isaac, Campbell & Co in London in the 1850s and went on to supply war materials to the southern states of America during the civil war.

The buckle is 2 ¼ inches (5.75cm) in diameter and has a width of 3 ¼ inches (8.25cm) including the belt loops. It weighs 74g.
~ Condition ~
The buckle is in great condition with the general wear associated with an item of this age. Just traces of the original gilded finish are visible. The stamped letters are clear but with no rough edges. It has developed a patina.
